I also have a fishpond where I can collect handfuls of fresh algae with ease.

1) I suppose I could easily feed the fish with the algae...correct?

Step 1- spend a few minutes looking for the pleco... there he is, as usual on the huge piece of drift wood
Step 2- drop the wafer in the tank near the pleco... pleco swims away...
Step 3- drop another wafer in the direction he's swimming... ooohhh driftwood, pleco stops to lick the bark
Step 4- find the first wafer is crawling with snails, brush them off and move it closer to him...
Step 5- WHERES THE PLECO NOW?!? spend the next 5 minutes looking for him....
