I also use batting, 3 layer type, cut
Just ensure you get the "untreated" batting, you don't want those nasty chemicals in your tank.

You can also make a simple water polisher to speed up the process with buddy bottle and a power head and some filter floss.

I also use filter floss from chamdor, or if you go to lfs across the road from the big builders in Edenvale they sell large bags of floss for R90

You can also use one of those 'pool gobbler' socks - place it over the end of the inlet pipe to the sump, secure with elastic band. I find that most of the dirt gets trapped in the sock, which is very easy to clean, and the batting takes much longer to get dirty

How many litres in your system ? - the pump looks kinda small from the photos - how many LPH does it produce. What I am really asking I guess is how times an hour your water gets turned thru the sump. Must say your water looks crystal clear. I can see the box the pump came in but cannot read L.P.H. so just asking

Is your overflow box noisy or do you have a Durso in there? My life changed after I made a Durso to stop the noise

And honestly - save some money ( quite a bit sadly) and change to Matrix instead of those blue balls. The surface area in Matrix is FAR greater. Those big balls just take up more volume and have less surface area for bacteria to grow on.
The idea with the batting is to prevent the heavy solids from going IN TO your filter media, so it really would be best to have it as the first thing the water from the tank flows thru - so it can catch all the solids - filter sock at end on inlet even better!
What are those white square things that the water falls on to?
