warning on tap water

think i am going pythos shopping based on this. cons are such hardy little fish and they are dying i really need the fish keeping gods help out on this one with the rays
have not bought for a while but company i used was called flowbin.co.za i bought 8 and they where cheap and would deliver.

 

What about the plain old sweet potato trick i keep them in most of my tanks for fish hiding and fry . Also i think they look cool. This is only 2 on an piece of perspex.

Drop an sweet potato in the tank it feeds on the dirty water and goes crayzy. If it dies i replace it, i have not watched the vid far enough to know why it dies.

I use an piece of perspex cut an hole and add an sweet patato halfway in the water. Or use an piece of wire around it make an hook and hook it on. It takes about 3 days to start growing or shooting roots. My tanks with them in thrive.

 

Aparently strawberry plants can do the same but im yet to try them. Need to get some.

@Figeth recommended something like this to me when I was having issues with green water to help use up the excess nutrients!

 

@top dog Thinking about this now what would be cool for you , if you get an milk crate/plastic crate cable tie some pool noodle to the side and float in your bins. Full off plants the Aqua ponic guys may know more about this .

It should save you a tonne on chemicals and electricity just have an small re-circulating pump.
to my knowledge it wont add any strain so to say on the water like unnecessary bio load while you WC water is curing. But again I not sure how mush nutrients the plants will get out the water so you may need to add some aquaponic soil type thing. So the plants will keep doing their best.

What I wanted to ask what ph do rays do well in ? As this may drop your ph if you add some nutrient (soil) to the water column. Which I think the rays may enjoy an slight biological ph drop.

 

done quite a bit of hydro farming over the years but always used nutrients and not the fish waste think the rays water needs are a bit to sensitive to produce enough waste for plant growth, honestly trying to get body corporate to let me put up a greenhouse to use all the waste water i generate to grow vegetables but with nutrients.

With the amount and types of foods I have read you guys feeding I think you should hear them grow.

But with all this I would take it as an ass saver not an solution to the tap water issue.

I need to have an look what cartridges is available at puritec NH4 wise there must be something you can connect inline Im sure.

using clinofish in a old canister filter
it is same basic stuff, and was avaible in large 25kg bags for 250 bucks. have spoken to a few water purification guys and my understanding is i will not get it right in a single pass and re circulation is the best bet.
hoping i get home to a 1000ltr of clean water from 36 hour of circulation

 

Well from what everyone's said with the safe or prime, it binds the nitrite and ammonias so that they can be used up (or did I understand that completely wrong?) in which case the plants can absorb all of it..
Also creeping Jenny will grow super quickly even submerged! I got some cuttings from the nursery I work at and put them straight in my tank (after cleaning them up properly of course) and in a few days they rooted

 

So amguard might have worked or might have not.

So I gave it a 2cap dose in a 30 gallon and it’s been about 16hours now and the test is showing 0.5ppm this dose is the strongest. They did say that it might not test correctly due to the way the tests work. But so far I don’t trust it. If the prime bottle I tested on Sunday has low ammonia then the way to go for sure is with prime. I will test when I go home later tonight. As when I did a water test with prime I could see it did something and lowered it to 0.3ppm

Great service and prices are reasonable, the price on the list is not fixed and I got the media at discount of R100 per kg.

I also buy the PURE POND bacteria balls and Alfagrog E25 from him.

It is a bit expensive but worth every cent in the long run, I use the E25 to boost the ammonia-nitrite-nitrate cycle and although the Biohome Ultimate does the same, the focus is to house the anaerobic bacteria for the breakdown if the nitrates.

 

Hornwart just loves ammonia, all my tanks have more hornwart than fish, lol, it competes with the bacteria to gulp up the ammonia.

Top Dog, maybe add 30 to 50 strings of hornwart in your flow bin, but then you will have to hit the bin with direct sunlight and the algae will also join in the fun, which may not be a bad thing.

Dechlorinate water in bin, give a few days for plants to do their thing, test and add to tanks.

You can also try the Devil's Ivy with the flow bin, but take note that it is poisonous to pets, so take care.

 

More tests done

Got water from my in-laws who stay in douglasdale close to bryanston in jhb north and the water test went the same way. 0.5ppm

There was a comment that Seachem prime only lasts 24 hours. I did a test on some treated water. I added prime to that 5l jug about 84 hours ago and I couldn’t believe it but the ammonia is still at the same point hasn’t changed. It’s reading between 0.05-0.1 ppm after 3 and a half days.

The tank water is starting to smell again even after adding amguard highest dosage last night.

So this time added 2 caps of amguard and some prime

I will keep doing this for the remainder of the week and feedback on the results. I plan on testing the prime treated water bottle on Sunday to see if it hold low ammonia for a week

To be honest I am not sure if amguard actually helps as if it did surely the smell would have gone for a while
