For the second time in as many weeks, my dominant pair of Jewels has taken over a corner of the tank. Eggs were laid right after an afternoon water change, and filter clean. Last weeks set of fry I sanctioned off in a breeder box but their numbers eventually dwindled as a result of the rest of the community. What should I do? I plan to move the female when she picks up the fry and have the fry in a separate empty planted tank.

Is it worth growing out the fry and trading/swopping?
Also, I assume the grow out tub would have to be heated? (Have an indoor 200L that could be a good bet)

The fry have just been gobbled up by the mother, hope someone can help me soon or I might have to grow them out anyway!

Hi @RayBarKer. Congratulations on the spawn.

I have had jewels breed successfully in the past and had like 200fry per batch. At the time a friend who owned a pet shop used to take them off me in exchange for food so it was s great deal for me.

I've never had the female or male turn on the fry they usually excellent parents. I'm not sure what you meant by when the mother picks up the fry but you can definitely move parents and fry together, or maybe even just fry. I only had one pair so not able to advise on them being in a community

Breeding fish in a community tank is always going to be more miss than hit unfortunately.
The rest of the fish will see the fry as snacks.

If you are serious about breeding, it's probably better to have a dedicated tank for the breeding pair. And another grow out tank for the fry.

Not sure if Jewels are BL, so may be limited if you can sell them on or not. Perhaps some local members can advise there.
And also, if you fish a churning out batch after batch of fry, you will find the lfs will be prepared to take a small fraction of them.
So perhaps keep the setup as is. And there will be the odd survivor which will add to your stock in the tank

Very good info! Yes, I have the breeding pair in a 20 long now and the female had dropped the fry onto the substrate. The female is moving the fry into a corner under some Java moss. They are just free swimming and I can't really count them but there looks to be over 50.
