    Hi all

I have an idea for something that I am gonna do anyway but thought it would be interesting if others wanted to join in.

A challenge with guppies stretching over about 1 year.

    Rules will be as follow.

    1. Choose a single mail and female guppy.
    2. Take a clear photo of both and tell us what you like about each and would like to enhance.
    3. Set an objective that you would like to reach after a year like breeding a pink guppy.
    4. You may introduce a new guppy to your breeding program at any time but one of the parents must always be related to the original pair.
    5. You can enter up to 3 pairs.
    6. You may join at any time but the deadline will remain the same for all.
    7. Keep the thread updated frequently with photos of your progress.

After a year we will look how far everybody got and vote for a few things like , best progress, best looking guppy, most potential etc.

So after the poll runs a few weeks and we decide to go ahead you will have 2 months to source your pair. After 2 months the year would start ticking off.

I know a year is a very short for a project like this but everything must start at a beginning.
After a year we can look at things and how to continue.

Any ideas to add will be welcome.

So fill in the poll to see if we got some interest.

    Regards
    Gerhard

And a few hours ago I snapped this pic randomly and thought; wonder if I should try the breeding thing.

    justthink.jpg

Now is the best time to start such a project.

    Love the idea.

Need to start a few tanks.

Oh wait - not sure why but I already did a few weeks back ... he he he

    wasgoing.jpg

Was going to do some blond kribs and minnows this season - actually got them yesterday, but I can park that idea.

Man some good info on TASA ... @Vis you still got some of these around ? Endler vs Guppy - Page 4

Looking at more old threads ...

Since playing more with planted tanks in the last few years I have never had this density again in any of my tanks.

    2010 ...

Need to remember what I was feeding them.

Hi Ferdie, you wont believe but I think that entire endler strain was lost. I had to give them up for a while and could not track down one pure one after that.

That would have been awesome to pursue though.

What do the numbers look like to run 3 pairs .. and what is the max line breading aim in 12 months - assuming you can get a male that is going to last 12 months more and a female that has not yet been hit but will be ready in 30 days.
I am going to battle to clean out more than 9 tanks maybe 10 for this effort. Aggrr see what you have done --- LOVE IT mind is going at 100 miles an hour now.

Hmm what gives better colour - low light or direct sunlight - so many question need to find answer now now now now .. .

    wait first need coffee !!!!

wait re-learning a few things again

They say nine tanks to secure a new strain, have not done the calculations yet but with cleaver thinking I think it can be done with less.

Need a proper diagram of line breeding and explanation but cant find one.
Keeping two lines of a single pair might add up the tanks. But nothing a good rack and some DIY 40x40x40 tanks cant solve :)

O and i read that UV from direct sunlight makes guppies sterile

Wow .. I had a few ponds at one point that would counter that idea, but OK.

Man not sure about starting this with the mud I have at the moment... yeah got some nice looking fish - but no clue who the parents are.

Think my plan of attack will be "casual strain development" as described here http://www.guppies.com/forums/showthread.php/32979-How-To-Casual-quot-Strain-quot-Development-(Simplistic-Line-Breeding)

Lol -- hmm let me see that guppies in that tank got given to the LFS on republic, that shop changed ownership and clientèle, 5 years on - we might have to go hunting for it's offspring in a retirement village in Port Alfred.

On another site the guy stated if you put a bunch of fancy guppy strains in a pond that after a few generations they would have reverted back to their wild guppy looks...
But it is to late now to boggle guppy genetics. See you guys later.

A year seems a bit short? I put a sexually mature male in with 3 females early in June and I'm still waiting to see fry. If they eventually do produce the offspring that I'm hoping for, I'll be crossing those with full black guppies. Can't see that taking any less than a year, then the fry still need to mature..

This bad boy is in a pond with 3 different females...
    image.jpg

This is one of the females. I don't have pics of the other two ladies..
    image.jpg

hoping to eventually have a half black guppy with a flame tail and flame dorsal. That will take time though.

Hi @Broder yes a year is very short for this but it is only the start. The long term prize will be some true breeding high end guppies. Might take up to 4 years or more.
But 4 years from now we will think "If only I started 4 years back I could have had and awesome strain by now" So this is just to prevent that :)

The goal is also to inspire each other to keep going, get advise, ideas and share in the good or bad.

@Broder I really like that male, if you breed it to be bigger with a delta tail and big dorsal it should look stunning.

the new full black male that I got a week ago, has a large tail and dorsal fin.... Don't know how big it is yet, as they're still young.

I've just returned them into their own breeding pond, things should start happening soonish.

    That's an awesome fish!

check the negative space in the tail... It looks like a fish chasing it.
