I'm also having trouble with that. I have some that are about 6 weeks old, but am still unsure. Some appear to have a gravid spot already, so obviously female. Does the gravid spot mean that they're pregnant already??

Yeah I am leaning to letting female that have had a few drops .. run barren for a few months then get them hit again.

The idea would be an over supply of females to male ratio - just to protect her a bit.

Well my one female dropped fry today, the female I thought hit by the sudden not so female, but it is too soon so she must have been hit when I bought her. The male I actually wanted to mate with her are not there yet so would have to wait for the next drop to add him.

Will raise these fry out of curiosity.

The females I want to use also need another month to grow out. Then another month to drop so I recon I am only really getting going in Jan.

Yeah my plans are evolving also, green water is sorted for fry, mosquito larvae for food and clean the last of the 3 two foot tanks the will hold each a red male .. then I will exchange the females in and out - just hope I can keep track of who goes where. Committed 9 tanks to this with two more if need be.

I will be using dither females to hopefully take some stress of the females I actually want breeding.

Gonna try something a tad different to try and minimize inbreeding without to many tanks.

Will use 4 dedicated breeding tanks and what I call the gene pool :) might have to split it in two at some stage though.

Use them as an excuse to start your next tank ;-)

Seriously for me it is not a problem - I have them as my primary fish in planted tanks .. few years ago I got a bit zealous and end up giving a few 100 to a LFS - gonna try and reduce that this time around. Before I used to forget fish in the outside tanks during winter then only rescue the really tough ones for the next years efforts.

Local pet shops are always in need of some guppies to sell even more so when you can start providing them with better looking ones.

My one female guppy had about 6 fry last night :).

Eager to see the coloring when they grow. Have 2 more in my breeding box that will give me more fry very soon.

Sadly I can no longer participate in the 1 year guppy challenge, although I would definitely like to try breed some interesting guppies some time, I just won't have time for it over the next year.
To cut a long story short, I've just started studying, and I write my first exam in Feb, then it'll get more intense from there for the next year. Maybe once the studies are done, I'll try this and see how it goes :)

Good luck to everyone participating... I still look forward to your entries and progress :)

That's sad. Good luck with the studies though. What is it that you're studying?

Thanks Broder, yeah I was looking forward to it, but I'm pressured for time now. I'm studying to become an F&I (Finance and Insurance). Busy with the NCA (National Credit Act) course now.

Haha @Vis.. I know what you mean. I think that's why the momentum has dropped a little. We're all realizing that the possibilities are endless, even with just a few fish. Then we see random specimens that are better looking than what we've already committed our program to and start to change tack.

I'm sticking with my original choices, mainly out of interest in which genes get carried forward and to gain experience in how to create a line that breeds true. I think breakthroughs will occur much later down the line, when we learn how to isolate and manipulate dominant genes.

    6. You may join at any time but the deadline will remain the same for all.
    7. Keep the thread updated frequently with photos of your progress.
