Good day everyone. I have finally managed to pull apart my 4ft tank as I intend to redo the silicone.

    1. What is the best marine silicone to use?

    2. Do I need a silicone tool?

    3. How do I ensure that I do this correctly as I've never built a tank before?

    Thank you.

Try and get Den Braven aqua silcone. Some LFSs stock it.

You can use an old credit card cut the corner off at 45 degrees and use it to spread the silicone in the seems.

On can buy the Bostic Tool at Gelmar for R29 for a pair, the work well and give even finish. Std 4ft you can use Bostic Marine, anything bigger Ben Braven. I am battling to find Den Braven in PE and I have seen some places sell for R180 a tube, I am currently revamping a 2,5m x 0,6m x 0,6m.

Those Bostic spreaders are great, especially as the edges are bevelled on one side

Thank you for that. The fish store I shop at here in Durban can get Den Braven Marine Silicone.

But check the price in comparison to Bostik if only for a 4ft tank Bostik could be your option.

Also make sure to clean the glass inside with acetone once you have removed all the old silicone. I also used masking tape and made a mask around the inside so that you can get a nice even finished line around the tank. You remove the mask after you have finished siliconing just before it starts to cure.

I'm either gonna go with Den Braven or Glue Devil. I've watched a few videos on YouTube. The masking tape actually gives it a nice even look.

If I were you I would stay away from Glue Devil, I have had bad experiences with it, does not bond to glass at all!!! Rather go with Bostik Marine.

Thank you for telling me this. Bostik Marine is more widely available than Glue Devil as well.
