Thanks @GaryG the parents are giving it their best. I thought the platys would be the biggest culprits but actually the diamond tetras and rummy noses who show the most interest

Yesterday afternoon the rams moved the brood to the front of the tank, which I thought was a risky move.

But thinking about it, having the fry up against the glass means they only have 180 degrees to defend...

There are a few less this morning but the parents are very relentless in defending them

The parents were losing control of the situation so I pulled a few (counted 28) and left most.

Going to try raise them in this 10L makeshift hatchery that has been running for a couple of months with heater and sponge filter. Did a big wc on it yesterday and cranked temp up.

Edit: thanks again @Cale24 for all your behind the scenes advice

    Good luck!

Do you find the rams go for your shrimp at all? Or do they leave them alone? They're such a beautiful fish I'd love to add them to my tank in future. I think I have too many neons to add them right now, but maybe if I get that "almost-cube" I could add them then.

The rams don’t go for the amano shrimp because they’re quite large shrimp as adults. I think they would go for dwarf shrimp.

Yes cool a pair in a cube community would be great! Tank mates would have to be happy in warm water though, German blue rams need it around 28C. So not neons but cardinals and rummy noses for example.

PS all the remaining fry in the tank got eaten so glad I pulled some yesterday!

Thanks. Good to know about the Temps!

Sorry the fry all got eaten. I hope the few you pulled out survive.

Why am I so late to see this update?

Great job on pulling the fry. This means you're going to start a new grow out tank? :tt2:

 Not quite. Only space for 1 pair in a tank. Not super aggressive but they are cichlids after all

Cause they’re tricky and I’m not an experienced breeder, basically :)
