So I did a 50% wc which brought nitrates down quite a bit. Tricky to read the colours and increments are big (jumps from 10 to 25) but looks closer to 10 to me?

I saw her this morning and she might be slightly better but not out of the woods yet.

Also forgot to mention that I cleaned the filter on Saturday but it wasn’t really dirty.

How low do you have to get them?

Good question- @Cale24 for the rams?

I like to run my tanks at max 10 but 20 would be high and require intervention... Tank might be overstocked also.

As long as its below 25ppm, rams will be fine, based on my experience. They can handle a little higher, but not for long.
Looks to be at a good level now. The floating plants will be a useful buffer too.

I guess just keep an eye on things for a week or two? I sometimes use Potassium Permanganate doses to eradicate unknown/ inexplicable organics but only if nothing else works.

Doesn't that turn your water purple?

While it is working yeah, then pink, then amber when it's near the end of the process. It is quickly disabled with Hydrogen Peroxide.
Dosage is critical though, and I can elaborate if interested. As mentioned, tend to only use it as needed.

Nah, thanks, don't think I need it or am likely to use it (though will remember if needed in future). Just never would have thought one would put that in an aquarium. I've only ever known it as a treatment for cold sores

Yeah had some left over...jooookes.
It's been used with Koi for decades, but at the right dosages (1 - max 4ppm) is fine for regular tanks too.

I saw a video from the Jack Wattley discus hatchery, and they use the same method for every batch of fry when raising them, usually at about the 1 month mark

Interesting, didn't know they used it with fry. Never used it when occasionally raising my rams but have tried H202 when they contracted columnaris (which was hell, with only a solitary survivor).
    Thanks.

Unfortunately found her dead just now @Cale24 . Saw her yesterday and thought she’s looking a bit better perhaps. But haven’t seen her at all today so searched the tank...
I did dose as suggested but she was probably too far gone already.

Oh no, sorry to hear that :(
Don't beat yourself up though, it can happen so easily with rams. The male's are okay on their own but if I get breeding up to speed I can always supply a female again.
