My plan for growing the Riccardia. An ancient piece of dowel (pine, I think, but it has no smell left even after filing a flat on it), and waxing sticks. Protip: thin superglue is TERRIBLE for gluing wood and this took me ages to make.

The dowel has been cut to length to wedge between two suckers. This allows me to move it around in the aquarium as needed or easily remove the whole lot without disturbing the wort itself or messing with rocks.

I'll let it percolate overnight and tomorrow I'll attach the wort. Wish me luck!

Okay, took my spare 2kg to Donair today at 12 as I was visiting another company less than 2 km from them. Little holdup with them, but if you plan correctly it should not be an issue. They dont start the filling process if they do not have enough cylinders to fil. They do fill every day, normally in the mornings, but I missed the morning fill. Had to leave my bottle there to be filled with 20 others tomorrow morning, but for me that wasnt a deal breaker as i am in the area again tomorrow.

Before you take the cylinder to them, just phone and conform about next planned filling time, or be prepared to drop of the cylinder today and collect it tomorrow. Still worth the effort, price confirmed at R20 per kg.

Just as info for people wanting to take their cylinders to Donaire.

This has to be the most innovative plant grow out in the country. From the substrate to the CO2 and now the spine and ribs running down the middle

Yasss. Earmarked and set aside. I did however steal one of the side-pointy-hole outflow tubes to add a bit of movement to the planter - I do like my caustics a lot.

what i found works quite well for riccardia and mosses is the slate tile pieces.

unless you have unlimited funds to afford the magic ADA ones, get a slate tile from builders, split it to make thinner pieces, and then break it up into smaller pieces, round the edges against concrete or even rough sandpaper, and then stretch fruit net over the riccardia or moss and a small zip tie at the back. then you can place these anywhere and the plants grow to cover the netting

My dad reckons I overthink things :)

:D My plan for the scape involves precisely this - there is a tonne of slate tiles stacked in the corner at the back of the garden. Unfortunately it isn't the pure blue variety, but it will do very nicely for what I'm planning. I will probably end up using glue though - or more likely, a dry start to make what I have go further.

:) Hmm lemme see. Steel section and other bits and bobs are getting delivered tomorrow so this weekend has been set aside for stand making - the bare frame at least. Then I have to construct the actual scape, which is going to be a time consuming affair, I think, considering what I want to achieve. Maaaaayyyybe next weekend or the weekend thereafter I might be in a position to begin a dry start but it's up in the air still.

Water cloudiness is finally starting to disappear. And I finally have some algae! No doubt this was the result of the root stix, which I have been dosing at the rate of one every three days.

After having researched some DIY fert recipes, it dawned on me why the API pond kit has a phosphate test. Ponds are subject to terrestrial runoff and terrestrial ferts tend to have increased phosphate concentrations.

One of the benefits of having a livestock-free propagation setup is that you can use terrestrial ferts - the nitrogen component is usually urea which is converted into ammonia, but plants aren't too fussed about that. Unless I start doing water changes (and I haven't done a single one), phosphate buildup might start being a problem however.

Not a bad price at transfire but R40 is definitely the way to go.

I bought it secondhand from a guy who upgraded. If I recall correctly, I paid R500 for a 2kg.

Just checked market place, look around there, there is even 9kg cylinders going for R150(Filled) and R50(Empty). If i remember correctly only certain cylinders has the correct fitting to accommodate the standard regulator. Will take a picture when my Cylinder is back, i did not collect yesterday, one of my guys will be collecting today.

A proper regulator and solenoid combo id pretty expensive, depending on where you buy.

    THis guy explains it nicely.
