    Hi guys, bit of a noob question here.. I'd really like to get hold of an angelfish with vertical black bands, but I don't really know what to ask for. From what I've read, these seem to be the 'wild type' Pterophyllum scalare, as in the picture:

    However, I barely ever see these, generally I only see marbled ones and ones which include orange.

    Do I understand that if one asks for dantums, you'll get something similar to the picture? It seems that dantums have a long story and are meant to be a crossbreed between Pt. scalare and Pt. altum (i.e. Danziger Altum) but there's some controversy about this.

    So, what is the common name of this banded angelfish, or should I be asking for 'wild type'? Will asking for 'zebra' get me close enough? Is it worth it to pay the extra for dantum?

    So called Dantum's look like that, they are p. Scalare, reasonably available up here, contact Moolis at pet stop, they have them from time to time and he can get them to durban

    Wild type Angels have the vertical stripes.

    Tank bred specimens should be relatively easy to get hold of.

    So there isn't a specific common name? Dantum's are sold for a premium I understand, but I'm actually not after pedigree, just looks..

    My take on it that it is clever marketing, you are familiar with the story behind the so called Dantums, up here they seem somewhat more expensive, but not excessively so. I have never gone back looking into their pedigree, but as DoubleDutch said this is in essence the natural colouring of P. scalare, probably now marketed as Dantums to squeeze a few extra bucks out of buyers?
    I have seem comparisons between Altums and scalare, (the difference is vast) but not between natural coloured scalare and Dantums, or between Dantums and Altums for that matter, perhaps one of the breeders will be good enough to explain the differences to us.

    I've always referred to the angel in the pic as Dantum Angels. you shouldn't be paying a premium on those. I'm curious to hear if there is another strain of "true" Dantums, and what their characteristics are. Maybe @jabula7749 can help?

    Ja @Broder, the angels in your avatar are beautiful, I know you refer to those as dantums. I assumed that 'true' dantums had clearer, better defined bands (amongst other distinguishing features), whereas I'd be happy with more poorly defined bands as in the photo in the original post, if this was significantly cheaper. However, if 'dantums' aren't really sold at a premium, I'll just look for that.

    @Broder
    The dantums is just peruvian scalare.
    the dantum name origan from Shahar danziger in Isreal who just gave them a name.
    when imported from him they are a bit on the pricey side,but now so many people is SA bred them in their thousands that you would be able to find them all over SA.
    moolis at petstop might have and will ship and he wont ask you a arm and aleg for it as he gets itnfrom someone local in Pta.

    My understanding is that the original Dantums were a lot better quality than the rubbish that can come from the big farms in Asia.
