I'm toying with the idea of possibly adding some apistos to my 4ft/250L community tank when I set it up.
It will house things like tetras, SAE, nerites, ghost shrimp, dwarf neon rainbow fish etc. And possibly corydoras. And maybe rasbora.
And it'll be reasonably well planted. Not super heavily as I want lots of open swimming space, but I do plan to have quite a lot of plants and hiding spots.

I really like the apistogramma cacatuoides and think it will work well with my water parameters. I tend to keep my current fish at 24C so will aim to run that tank at a similar temp.

I was originally thinking just one pair (as in 1M:1F, not necessarily a breeding pair) of cacatuoides, but I can't make up my mind between the orange flash and the double/triple red. I really like both.

Is it possible to have a pair of each in that size tank? Should I have more females? Would I be better off with just one? I don't really want to land up with aggression issues.

Also, do apisto's eat shrimp or will my ghosts be relatively safe? (I know occasionally the odd one might go missing but I don't want them all brutally hunted down and devoured).

It's her photos that make me completely unable to decide between the two!

    Totally. @Chandz could advise!
But to one pair I give a big thumbs up. They won’t demolish your shrimp population but they’ll pick off some, no doubt. Densely planted tank would be the way to protect shrimplets.
Personally I find the platys and guppies to be bigger culprits

This is so funny and interesting because I was literally googling both platties and guppies the last two days!! My cousin recently got both and I'm sorely tempted, but came to the realization they would devour my shrimp and I love my ghosties so will rather give them a skip.
