So I purchased some Christmas Moss a few months back and it rather quickly developed a case of Black Beard Algae. I have been in the hobby for about 18 months now and this is the first time this infamous terror has entered one of my tanks, This weekend I took the moss out and treated it for 72 hours with a double dose of Seachem Flourish Excel and the the BBA seems to be going red - as various fora suggest it should. Does anyone have experience with treating this terror of the hobby? Might I be on the right track?

You’re on the right track. Also look at the thread ‘how to balance a planted tank’ - was a BBA discussion in there
