Thanks, yes, from my reading it seems silica is a vital ingredient in making glass, it's not made from glass like the lady on fb suggested.

Regarding the rinsing, I'm hoping to use @Shabir 's method that he mention on a different thread - putting small quantities (around 1kg) into a pillow case and then sticking the hose pipe into the pillowcase. Hopefully it works well.

 

Silica sand and pool filter sand are the same sand. Its an inert sand as you dont want any reactions happening in your pool filter. Its literally there as a mechanical filtration mechanism.

I cleaned mine by putting it in a bucket, adding water and then mixing it with my hand, pouring out the dirty water and repeating until the water was more or less clear
