Cabinet building

I have a few questions i need answered:blink1:

*Is it a must to have a steel stand?
*Can you build it out of wood only, and not use steel?
*Is the above * safe?
*If so what type of wood?


The reason why i want to only go with wood is because working with steel isnt my thing.
Besides that, i can only work on it for 30m a day and with wood i can go right through the night.
And it will be more appealing, to me anyways!

This is for my 3ft. Measured last night 92(L) X 32(W) X 38(H)

*Will the weight be a problem?
*What support can i use, if any?
*What type of bottom base? Flat or legs?
*Tanks base, flat or same style as the steel ones?

I have seen this on the net and it can be done. But i always prefer to get

similar to pic with closed back.
divide bottom into 2, will be support and add 2 doors.
also add add ready made legs, can be bought at builders or timber city.
add 1 or 2 legs in the centre, also for support.
easy as pie.

superwood if you painting it black.
screws not nails, drill pilot holes first or the wood will split.

 

i use a wooden stand for my 100L and my 616L tank , google "wooden fish tank stands" you get some nice designs.

Yes you can

Troy – you can definitely use wood to build a stand. I made a stand for two three foot tanks, one above the other, and a sump at the bottom. Will take some photos of the stand and post them.

Note, steel is much stronger and actually cheaper than wood. Wood is, however, much easier to build with - thats if you cant weld like me...

 

Yeah true. The steel i have is from old gates. The problem is when i get home
its too late to make a noise, meaning will never get done. Luckly for me my father knows his wood work:bigsmile:

Sum maths here:

Steel + me = long time
Wood + Father - me = Less work for me

Trying to figure out how much wood im going to need. Any easy way to do this?

 

Troy – What I did is build four frames the size of the base of the tank. I then bolted these frame to the up rights, starting with the bottom one on which the sump is, and then the next, leaving enough space to fit my arm in to do maintenance, and so on, until the last one at the top. A picture tell a thousand words – will post pics tomorrow.

I would suggest that you use three frames – one for the bottom, one in the middle and the last one that your tank will be sitting on. This give you approximately a 7500mm length of timber. But you will require some timber for the up rights as well. Four 3.0 meter lengths should be enough. That will leave you with enough timber for the up rights.

 

ACTUALLY TROY... if you go to a person who works with steel, get them to supply AND BUILD the frame, TO YOUR SPECS, it will be cheaper than you building out of wood. AND they would probably have it done in 2 days.

 

Well considering the price i was just given for the wood....i think i am going to do that lol!

 

Remember with the wood option you are paying for the astheticially pleasing look as well. I don't like the look of a steel frame with nothing covering it... and I don't like a "table cloth" of paper stuck onto the frame to make it look nice.

But then again, if you get a steel frame, and then just make a wooden box with three sides, you could just push that up against the frame, and viola... everything covered!

This I have seen and done, and it is as easy as pie, and look good!

Troy – what size timber did you get a price on – I use 72mm x 34mm SA Pine for the stand.

Also in the same boat as you TroyFish. I also wanted a canopy for lights.
I went to builders on Thursday to see what they had. My dad, having built T.V. stands and the sort, suggested I use pine. Will cost quite a lot, but will look nice sanded and varnished.
