Cracked tank

Hi all,

I just picked up a 5foot tank with a crack in the bottom. It has been patched with 10mm glass on the inside where the crack is. Do you think this will be okay?
It has apparently been running like that for a 2years. Should I put a new sheet under the existing one with maybe 6mm? Or should I replace the whole bottom?

I would replace the bottom, I just helped a mate rebuild his 10mm tank. Was not easy as I had to grind the base off, but the end product was good. What mm is the tank?

 

Best way to fix a cracked bottom is to drop in a floating base inside the tank over the entire bottom right up to the edges. It's will be stronger than the original base. From your description it sounds like they just patched the crack? Fill er up and see if it leaks. My guess is it will be fine. It's essential that it is on a flat surface, preferably steel, and has a layer of polystyrene. A base cracks when the wooden stand its sitting on warps.

How much do you think it would cost me to have the base replaced and the entire tank stripped and polished and resealed?

Less than R500
Your choice how to tackle it but if it was me id pull out the old patch and drop in a full floating base. 8mm, not 10 cos its half the price and almost as strong.
Maybe R80 for marine silicone. R400 for the glass.
