    These are very beautiful fish and more commonly known as Siamese Tiger fish.I too am looking at purchasing a few.In Gauteng, they have a price tag between R400 - R900.

    They only had the 1.
    Am concerned about aggression

    I think the Siamese get bigger than the Silvers and are a different colour
    The Silver was £60 (approx R1,000)
    Awesome photo

    @Reedfish,

    Yes.. that's a Silver Dat or American tiger fish as some call it... not sure where the American comes from....they native to Asia

    Southeastern Asia, with confirmed records from India (Chilka Lake, Mahanadi and Hooghly rivers), Bangladesh (Ganges River delta), Myanmar (Yangon and Salween rivers), Thailand (Songkhla Lake, Tha Taphap and Chao Phraya rivers), Vietnam (Mekong River Delta), Malaysia (Perak, Bernam, and Melaka rivers, Peninsular Malaysia; Sarawak and Rajang rivers, Sarawak, Borneo), Singapore (Pulau Ubin), and Indonesia (Batang Hari River, Sumatra; Sambas, Kapuas and Barito rivers, Kalimantan, Borneo).

    There are a few species of Dats.... its actually the next fish which i was going to do a caresheet and species page for our oddball section... have started but not ready yet...
    Cesar can chime in here... he had two silver datnoids about two years ago... so he can comment there

    I think other members have some to.
    The Silvers were the first ones that started coming in to SA

    At moment, i have 3 NTT ( Northern Thailand tiger) and a small wide bar IT (Indonesian tiger)
    Both IT's and NTT's are yellow bodied with black stripes
    Will strat a thread soon

    They grow to about 30cm but are very, very slow growers...
    They do eventually need large tanks and excellent filtration

    @TropicalBoy ... there are no Siamese Tigers for sale almost anywhere in the world right now... least of all South Africa

    They are extinct in the wild and attempts are being made to captive breed them but i believe they battling to get it right or in quantities to sell
    I am researching that at the moment

    What you will find for sale are mostly the NTT
    By luck, you might pick up an Indo but they scarce too

    @MariaS it's sad for me to see how the asians destroyed their fish populations. Same can be said about the asian arowana too. A real shame. They had the most beautiful fish and now have nothing left. This is the reason I don't fish the ocean anymore. It's bad to see the guys killing fish after fish even though they already have a cooler full. I only fish catch and release venues now. I couldn't take the mindless idiotic killing anymore. Catch and release is where the real fun is, I've caught the same bass many times over and it's nice to see them again, full of energy and ready to fight. My favourite is a 2.8kg female. Not going to say where though haha.

    Yes... it is very sad....

    The Asian Arowana is same problem though not as bad as the ST which they say is extinct and are trying to find and establish what population is left

    The Asian Arowana's up side is that they are being bred in large quantities in captivity...
    The ST... they battling to get it right so its at a much larger threat.

    @Reedfish...

    Something I forgot to mention... there is a lot of controversial info on the Silver Dat...
    Silver Dat is supposedly a brackish water fish..

    Some say there are areas where they caught in freshwater... trying to establish that..
    Some say they thrive in freshwater if properly acclimated... some say they dont live so long..
    So the controversy goes...

    good Morning Reedfish...

    I had a sliver dat a wile back and yes they are agro.. I landed up taking him out as he would harrass all the fish including an aro that was triple his size...
    yet the plus side is they are 100 time more outgoing and they grow faster than the likes of your ST,ITT and NTT...

    if I was you I would stay away as to not upset the apple cart (so to say)
