    Dear Prof D,

Some time ago I found one of my koi dead in my pond. It is not a very good quality fish so I am not to bothered by its death unless it starts to affect the show fish in the pond. It has been suggested in another forum that a fish might die of lack of empathy or compassion from its owner, do you think it was the case here? Please see the photos attached.

Here is photo of its pond... just incase you might want to see where it lived. :wondering:

It is a very nice home he lived in. How old was he? Looks like he lived a nice long life anyway :)

    Hi Henk,

Although I do not keep koi, I envy you for your nice pond, which I have seen in real life guys, it is very nice.

However, this has a very worrying side that one needs to take careful consideration of. Koi, just as other carp type fishes, get internal infections from bacteria called Aeromonas and similar bacteria called Streptococcus. This type of infection also occurs in trout with large resulting losses.

The cause of such infections is via transfer from other fishes, but it can be transferred by birds as well so with an open pond you never know where it has come from. However, I think you know very well that bringing in new fishes in the case of koi always carries a huge risk as you can introduce these bacteria. Your fish shows bloat which is a symptom of such infections.

Factors that contribute to the disease are overstocking, overfeeding and a lack of filtration. You need to do some careful calculations to see if these parameters are as they should be for koi, and I do not know what they should be, as I am not a koi boffin.

I have recently assisted with the development of vaccines against strep in trout, and it is for this reason that I know a little more about these problems.

    Comments from your side?

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

I think I now know what happened here, come to think of it and thanks to darryn's insights.

Henk walked passed the pond in the morning with his expensive sunglasses on. On the way out he thought he would just quickly check the koi, but because of the fact that these sunglasses are sooooo dark, he took them off whilst resting his hand on the side of the pond. Next thing his sunglasses fell into the pond and this koi went for the them. The rest is history and documented on this thread..... bacterial infection, my eye.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

No, but I have been told that I am pretty good at bsing, and the bs does not stand for brine shrimp.

Thanks for your confidence in my ability (in keeping Henk at bay).

Looks like Henk has thrown in the towel against the deluge that has hit him, or maybe he is swimming in the koi pond.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Maybe thats what killed the Koi?? I know I'd be scared if I saw Henk coming towards me in my Bath tub!! Hmmm, maybe thats not quite the same parallel??

Oh well! There goes my sleep tonight! Too scared now!

OH well, I always believe that if you give it, then you must be able to take it.

Gareth, your story has really got me scared ....

It's good to see that most of the people on this forum do have a sense of humour.

I think I agree that this conspiracy theory is another possibility, because if I were a koi and Henk would be swimming at me, I also maybe have a heart attack. Remember there would in all likelihood be some music in the background sounding similar to the Jaws theme tune. So much for your sleep now.....

    I would also be petrified....
