    Hey guys

Has anyone had any experience with these HOB filters?

I just bought one for my 80 litre tank, which is probably at around 75 litres at the moment, and was wondering if it'll be sufficient on its own...

I'm looking to take the Eheim internal filter and the corner(air pump driven)filter out and just run the HOB to give the tank a more open feel.
You guys probably know more than i do. All I know is that the water flow is great and it breaks the surface nicely allowing for oxygen to enter the system:D

Personally never owned one of these.... So cant give you a Yay or nay on it...

I do see that it makes use of a cartridge type of system - wich I'm not a fan of as it becomes expensive in the long run. Maybe look at retrofitting it to not use this insert. Not sure of how the flow works in it,but if you first fliter the water through some filter wool or even batting(would work real well - can be cut to size) and then have it pass on to some Seachem Matrix - you will have a filter that is more than capable of handling the bioload in your cube...

I would personally go with the aquaclear HOB you can add your own filter material to it and it lasts forever, my friends 1 he has had for 5 years now.

Thanks guys and girls. Appreciate the input. I had an aquaclear a while back on my marine tank running carbon and did find it to be a very reliable and efficient HOB filter. I found this Elite filter for R200 though and checked inside and there's plenty of space in it to put my own filter media in. The aquaclear was over R500!!!

Its got a 2 year warranty so if anything goes wrong I'll just claim my money back and buy the aquaclear:). But I'll keep u guys updated as to how this one does.

The tank it is on has been running for about a year now, so it is mature. Would 1 week be sufficient to seed the filter and remove the other filters from the tank?

leavi it for two weeks or so...maybe break a small peice of sponge off of your sponge filter and cram it in the HOB with the new media.... that will insure that your new HOB builds up it's Bacterial colony in no time...

In order to speed things up you can also use something like Seachem Stability to help seed the filter. Instead of pouring it into the tank water, mix it with a small amount of tank water and then pour it directly onto the new filter media.

Awesome stuff:) I'll take the corner filter out in the meantime and take some of the floss from there and put it in the HOB. Thanks guys:)

Thanks Azurekoi. Will keep the 2 prong:)

I had one of these and my gf still has one. They are great HOB filters. I found mine to work best with a biweekly maintenance schedule.

You should shave your legs, a little bit of make-up will do or ask your wife to go to any fabric shop.
Batting is used in pillows etc.
