Not much has happened with tanks 3 and 2 - so I added two air stones. Now we have loads of water movement - maybe to much. Tank 1 is still crystal, even after the chicken manure.

5 days with the air pump running 8 hours a day .. Tank 3 and 2 not much greener - this is after adding the chicken manure, amonia, cheap ferts. So I have two options ... 1 start over with just tank water - 2 add fish and see if this helps.

At the same time .. the clear container is very green at this stage - but has almost not mosquito larvae in it - the black container's water is actually very clear - but has loads of mosquito larvae.

So for this experiment - I would have to say clear beats back for making green water - short term.

The reason why tank 3 is still not as green is because the mass of the plants compared to the free floating algae is far greater. Most of the nutrients are absorbed by the plants, starving the "green water" . . . .

It doesn't get any greener than that . .

Tank 3 (the one on the left) has no plants - just water. If you mean tank 1 (the one on the right - yeah - I agree) But by this logic why do people who have well planted tanks say that they get green water sometimes - I have always thought excess fertz and light is all that is needed but this seems too simplistic after the 3 tank compare.

Last ditched attempt is to add fish food and loads of chicken manure and let that stew.
