So yesterday I went to the annual Festival of Fishkeeping event held about an hour from me.
The FOFK is a fish show, and there are vendors selling fish, plants and equipment, as well as private individuals selling excess fish.
    A few photos of interest:

    And more Rays

The Ray "shop" was someone I had not heard of before.
Had a long chat with him. He breeds the Rays, mainly hybrids. And also imports all sorts of oddballs.

There was also supposed to be a Discus show and one or two Discus sellers.
But apparently the Discus "crowd" withdrew with a few days to go. The organisers were not happy. And it was a shame.

That predatory tetra is a Hydrolycus, also known as a payara. :)

    That's a cool show!

If i had discus i would not take them to a show.... i do not think they will handle the stress of being moved so often. Bu again i will also not commit if i am not certain

The FOFK has had Discus shows regularly in the past
And Discus shows are quite common in Europe and the Far East.

    @MariaS
I seem to recall there was some sort of expo in Jhb 2 or 3 years ago??

OMG, those Rays. I was drooling.
I gingerly asked the chap the prices. Some weren't too bad.
But tbh, I can't go for more Rays unless I get rid of my lung.
Actually, I met someone at the show yesterday who said he would take him off me - I must name my price. Can't part with my lung. But I am keen on some of those Black Diamonds [/USER]

The expo a few years back wasn't a big sucsess. There was a few planted tanks and a lot of normal lfs stock. No fish for sale. There were some interesting presantations though. If I remember right the turnout of the public wasn't as expected and it was a loss for the organizors. Don't think it will happen in the near future

Ummmm hehe you have a major problem @Reedfish... how long are you going to be able to drool for????? Lets see...

From what i have read, the prices of BD's in the UK are not too bad at the moment, especially compared to here
I think there are a number of breeders in Europe at the moment and that helps a lot with the prices.
If we can get some breeding going here it will also help..

Rays as you know are awesome but Black Diamonds have a very different character from other rays we have.. they are a law onto themselves
Naughty, extremely active and play around all the time.
Everything is a toy to them
I now put some small pieces of wood that cant damage the tank, scattered around, so that they can carry them around and play.
    They are loads of fun

There was another fish keeping expo a few years ago. But it ran once or twice and then petered out.
Was more from a professional angle (the FOFK was more amateur hobbyists). But it was disappointing in that most of the exhibitors didn't have show specials, no freebies etc.
But I did get to go to some talks by, and have private chats with Heiko Bleher and Neale Monks
