The LFS had a few jumbo size Fire Eels.
    Was so tempted
But I don't have space in my tank

And also they were a bit expensive - £125 (R2,000), so I had to pass unfortunately

I am one of the probably many that made the mistake of not doing my research regarding fish I put into my tank years ago when I first started out with fish keeping.
I lent my ears out to the LFS salesman regarding eels, and got a Tire Track Eel.
Since then I have promised myself I would never get another eel.

That fire eel does look nice though.

I have also had a fire and a tire track eel.
Had the fire eel eat out of my hand. My experiences was pretty good with them.
@Pezulu , Why you against them?

@Gnl Jakes the tyre tracks eels get quite big, and I only had a 45cm tank when I first started keeping fish.
It made short work of the guppies and neons I had in the tank.
Every evening before lights out I would count the fish, and every morning there was at least 1 less.
It would also burrow under everything, and generally caused havoc in the tank.

I currently have 3 in my tank, very shy besides the smaller one. Have had them for about 5 months and no problems with feeding and up-keeping.

I have had Fire Eels in the past and they haven't done well for me.
    Not quite sure why?
I suspect they were small, quite shy and struggled to get enough to eat.

@Reedfish... I had one many years ago.... hahha about 25 years ago....

It was great while it was small although it would only eat worms but... it got big..... She was eventually at least 50cm and very thick
My tank then was 1.5m and not fair to keep her so I re homed her...
Thye are very powerfull when they get to that size and when they decide to dart around the tank.. everything goes flying
They are also expert escape artists..
    But... she was stunning

They can be picky eaters which is the main issue. They had a 10cm one for R600 at a local shop but I happily passed.

Peacock eels are similar but stay much smaller, just need a lot of care early on to make sure they settle in

Sounds a bit like my lung fish

With these sort of fish, I think one can get away with "smaller" tank sizes a lit bit more than active, constant swimming fish.

    I agree with you.
Hahaha she used to sit in the corner of the tank with her snout right up to the water level just waiting for chance to sneak out!!!

I can imagine what chaos is, if your lungfish decides to dart around!!
