I put in the tiger barbs as they are fin nippers(most people get 2 or 3) and the common plecos as they grow so large.

They are only fin nippers in groups small then 8. The bigger the group the better.

They are actually a brackish species, so they need completely different water conditions to most of the common community fish, they get territorial and aggressive and are usually fin nippers .

What other fish are you keeping ?

I think this thread is a nice idea to give guidance to new aquarists. However, I would like to suggest that we maybe approach this a little differently.

Instead of just listing a bunch of fish, maybe we could nominate a few boffins amongst us to do a write-up on specific fish species (or groups as is the case with brackish fish) that will explain in a bit more detail what their issues are? Maybe start a new tread for each?

I will volunteer to write about archerfish if anyone is interested.

Tiger barbs will nip at your other fish.......leading to the multiple tank syndrome which is enough to put a newbie off the hobby.

    Tiger Barbs

I love tiger barbs, if you have a group of six or more they will not nip fins.
They will be caught up chasing each other and paying no attention to the other fish.

Just my opinion though, from many years of experience.

I currently have ten of them with lots of guppies, neon tetra`s and many other fish with flowing / long fins...

    :)

As far as I know, as long as they have enough food they'll leave the other fish alone.... Supplement with sinking algae disks, because I seriously doubt there'll be enough algae for them in the tank (depending on the tank of course...).

Oscars - Grow at a quick rate and can be aggressive. Sold small and most buyers have no Idea of how big these fish grow

I'll also add that Knife Fish and most oddballs should be avoided. They either get to big, are agro, have specialised feeding requirements or are just to finicky.
