Guppy Challenge Entry: Ladysphinx

Setup: Chaos, lol
Let's see I have a 2ft tank with an internal filter where I will be keeping my breeding Adults. 3lt & 5lt tub to separate them if I need to. I can also add males back to the community tank if I need to. Then I have a 10L breeding tank for small fry aged new born - 2 months old with a sponge filter and a 50l for older fry with a sponge filter. I plan to get another 10l soon and have another 50l outside that needs to have bottom panel replaced.

Breeding stock:

Male 1:
Description: Young yellow Snakeskin with a rag tail
What you like about it: I'm looking for a good snake skin pattern to add snakeskin genes to my breeding stock
Where it came from: I got from someone my sister knows

Possible Male 2:
Description: Gorgeous Dark blue male with fins and tails that had a red tips. Sadly he passed away but not before getting my two blue females pregnant. Around 25 Fry from him was born in the last two weeks. Female number 2 is pregnant from him again.
What you like about it: The longish tail and the beautiful blue sheen he had on his body sadly he died about a week ago.
Where it came from: Bought at local Petshop

Female 1:
Description: A Big beauty with blue tail and fins
What you like about it: Longer fins then most females and she's huge
Where it came from: Local Petshop

Female 2:
Description: Another big beauty very blue fins and tail
What you like about it:The blue coloration of her fins and tail
Where it came from: Local petshop (not the same Petshop)

Female 3:
Description: Very young fry from first female starting to show same blue fins and tail coloration as mother. Too young to breed now but should be old enough in two or three months. Photo does not do the blue in her fins justice

I'm going to put male 1 and 2 females in separate tank and keep them there until I get a drop that have constant looking fry. Hopefully I will get enough males with snakeskin that has hints of blue tales. Will keep fry separate for now but hopefully I will have some viable fry from previous father who died I'm looking for males with blue coloration that I can breed with Females 1, 2 and three.

This is my first challenge so I will mostly be looking for blue guppies that I can breed with my yellow snakeskin.

Goals:I would like to breed a guppy line that gives me blue snakeskin guppies or I will try for blue and yellow tailed guppies with snakeskin.

With water I'm going for stable parameters rather then accuracy. Water change will be a constant 50% once a week with the fry tank being siphoned with thin airline pipe every second day to remove uneaten food. Temperatures in all tanks will be a constant 25°C. I will feed all my guppies as much variety foods as possible including cut up pieces of shrimp, bloodworms, tuberfix worms, microworms, mosquitoes larvae, egg yolk, blanched spinach sperulina and flake foods.

Thank-you van I also think they are good looking. Very excited as I've never really thought of breeding guppies for certain strains.

 

Today I separated all my males from my males except one stupid very young female I can't catch will try to remove her again later. I will wait until all my guppy female are done dropping then I will add yellow snakeskin male to them again for a week remove him again.

 

Breeding guppies into a line or just to see what you may get, is a lot of fun.

The snakeskin pattern is very dominant and you will get green/blue snakeskins in the first generation. I may be wrong but I believe your first two blue females are also carrying the snakeskin gene.

Good luck.....the biggest negative is to get a way to get rid of all the not wanted offspring!

 

I'm probably going to either sell the unwanted fry very cheap or give them away. My LFS said she's willing to buy guppies from me.

I just think my daughter won't be impressed lol

 

I really hope so because I haven't been able to find ANY blue males.

Guppies seems to be quite scarce at the moment.
When I decided to start up a guppy tank again I battled to find some good looking guppies.
One petshop in Centurion was asking R40 - R50 per guppy.
I finally managed to get a couple of stunning looking fish from Broadway Pets in Valhalla at a very reasonable price.
They have already dropped about 20 fry, that are free swimming in the tank.
The tank has lots of hiding places, and a floating piece that most of the fry use to hide in.

 

Wow Stilfontein is a bit of distance. My Grandparents use to live in Stilfontein when they where still alive. 200km away from me, my hubby would never drive that distance for a couple of guppies lol

 

I travel to OR Thambo airport for work often, if you willing to meet me there somewhere i can always bring you some.

 

OR Thambo could work, you will just have to let me know a day or two before you come through so I can organize transport as I don't have car with me and need to organize for it. Thambo is very close to us maybe 15 min drive.

Blue female guppy 2 was dead this morning when I woke up, which is heartbreaking. I have a couple of blue female juveniles but still......... She was suppose to give birth again any moment. I have noticed to male guppy juveniles with blue colouration too I think they came from female 2

 

That is just sad to hear. How will this affect your breeding plans?

Sad to hear, if you have any if her fry you should be OK.

 

Sorry for your loss. Was she a petstore guppy? Allot of us have bad luck with petstore guppies. Myself included. But my own breed guppies are tough as nails.

Yes she was a petstore guppy. I guess it happens to all of us

 

She gave me two sets of fry and believe some of my blue fry was from her.
