Background: The female is carrying the snakeskin gene and the male is probably her son. The history of the female is unknown. Further breeding will determine if this is true.

    The male:

    The female:

Description: The blue, yellow and black contrasts nice with each other. Under the blue light the yellow is very fluorescent. The male is still young, the tail will probably grow out more. The dorsal is small.

The yellow of the female is also very fluorescent.

Goal: I would like to intensify the contrast between the black and the other colors. The dorsal and tail can also be larger. Fixing a line will also be a goal.

My plan: The male and female will be bred to each other and then I will either breed best sons to mother, daughters to father or sisters to brothers. The female is already carrying fruy from another male - hope she will drop them soon and breed only to the new male.

The tank: I got some very nice plastic pet insect containers for R45 each at a local shop. They are big enough for trios and the fry. Only gravel, plants and one apple snail is added.

Awesome to see all of the amazing guppies that are out there already. This challenge started by @Vis is really gonna take the quality of guppies in SA to a new level hopefully. Very exciting to see what develops.

    Thanks for the positive replies.

The female has dropped about 35, father unknown, fry. For a backup I am keeping the fry in a plastic container outside.

Will see if the next batch is fixed.

The female has dropped another 10 fry, this time no sign of the red half black ancestry, so I do believe I will get some carrying the same trait as the parents. She is pregnant again, this time I am sure the male will be the father. Some pics of the pair:

(As usual the male will not pose as I want him to!)

Looking closely some of the red half blacks trait are still visible:

Notice the pink, orange, blue and green in both the males:

Those are beautiful. I can visualize that striking pattern of the male on a completely green and yellow body... Wow, that would be a fish to behold!

The fry is coloring up and it seems that the red of the red half black ancestry and the yellow of the female snakeskin is sex linked: Four males is showing red in the tail and body and the females seems to be carrying the yellow gene of the female:

Here is a not so good pic of the male fry and also how it is probably going to look when it has grown out:

    MALE FRY.jpg

    rooi mannetjie.jpg

The pic of the female fry does not show much:

    FEMALE FRY.jpg

Another pic of the snakeskin male:

There are new fry and I believe the male is the dad of this batch - will see how they look when they grow out.

The nicely colored female in the last pic turned out to be a male:

I do keep them separately - I want to see how they grow out.

Incredible how fast the fry grow into males. Must keep and eye on the fry or all one's plans can be spoiled very quickly!

The first two females from the pair is showing the same coloring as their mother and they are now pregnant from their father. The second batch of fry, definitely from the male, is coloring up and it seems to me they are going to be very uniformly in color - no red visible at this stage. The female had her third batch of fry - she was very bloated with this batch and was floating. After rubbing and pushing her tummy a bit, she gave birth to the fry and she is fine now. Will post some new pics as soon as the second batch's males have colored up.

I thought she was going to die. There was also a piece of "something" hanging out and it came of/out with the rubbing. I was feeding her and her two daughters heavily with micro- and banana worms the last few weeks- maybe she was congested or something?
