I have been doing a significant amount of research on the idea of using river sand as a substrate in my aquarium, I know all of the risk factors involved such as messing up ph, nitrate etc levels but I am fully equipped in that sense, my idea is boiling the sand it a pot constantly stirring as the sand will stick to the pot and burn, then add a little sand it a container and adding that to the tank testing the levels daily to see if it has any negative effect. I have read of people actually accomplishing this and I think it is a super cool "Natural" looking idea and want to give it a shot. I have access to a fast flowing river that as far as I know is flowing and is not septic. its an idea... let me know if you have any insight or ideas towards this ?:)

River sand is usually inert, just wash and boil it very well to get rid of any organics and pests that you don't want in the tank :)

You could make a backup with a coke bottle and a powerhead. I always keep spares running in my backup tank.
