I got some bigger oscars from a guy whose tank cracked, they attacked the little guy, 2 bites on his disk, he’s ok still eating like a monster and I quickly had to get rid of the Oscars, just shows how quickly something can go wrong82B091D4-159C-41CA-BD73-64E9DD7EA4D0.jpg

@Ruben Fitton , Im sorry to hear about the baby but Im glad she is ok

They do heal remarkably quickly if your water is clean, stress though will kill them very quickly so Im glad you have let the Oscars go

Also.. if you still have him... think carefully about the RTC.... he wont take a bite off your pup... he will flip it in half and swallow the whole pup
Happened to one of Cesar's friends not that long ago... its a matter of time...

Unfortunately.. as intimidating as stingrays might be to us humans they are one of the most placid and social fish you can have
They don't fight back when other fish bully them or bite them... they run away and bury themselves in the sand....a stingray almost always has to be totally cornered and unable to run to eventually strike so you have to be very careful in choosing tank mates
They are predators and once they get big, will most likely eat smaller fish ( some do.. some don't ) but its not out of aggression its to eat, as they don't bully any fish in their tank

Mild cichlids like blue acaras (no breeding activity so males only or females only) severums, geos (red head Tapajos are sometimes too cheeky)....
Datnoids, Silver dollars, tinfoil barbs, clown loaches and of course Arowanas are all good tank mates
There are probably a couple other fish but these are the most common that I can think of off the top of my head

I am concidering putting him into a minimalistic scape with mostly swords, driftwood, java fern and moss, I’ve found mixed feelings info on them in planted tanks, does anyone here know how they do with plants

I have found that Cichlids are not a good mix with Rays. Aside from Angels.
They are intelligent fish and tend to investigate the round pancakes lying on the bottom. Which means a peck here and there to see what it is.
Once a Cichlid starts with this, it doesn't stop.
I had to move my Chocolates, and also tried 2 types of Geo and it didn't work out.

Silver Dollars are a good option.
There are a few different colour forms to choose from - if they are available.

never thought chocolates would do that, always fond them to be very placid. guess rays are even more gentle than i expected. Part of me really wants something in the tank with my ray, part that worries me is that i would need to put in some cover or hiding spot as rays is always on the move day or night so recon she will stress out most other fish, and destroy cover or hurt her self on the cover i put in the tank. so no tank mates as yet

    @Reedfish,

Must admit I never thought the chocolates would do that
As for the Goes, Surinamensis and Threadfins have worked well with the rays and if I look at other ray keepers, they are the commonly used species with rays
We had Tapajos but those were too agro and picked on almost everything all the time.
Havent tried other species of geos as they not commonly found here

Angels are fine but here it depends on the rays.... angels are slow movers... I don't know the temperament of the Hysterix but with the Black diamonds.... they a bit feisty... I think angels at some stage would become breakfast

The thing with peaceful (mild mannered) cichlids is to have one only
If you have two of the same species either they pair up or the territorial behaviour kicks in and then you might or might not have a problem

Safest are still tinfoils, silver dollars, sieger sharks, clown loaches and flagtail (again here its luck of the draw, have heard some people say they suck on the rays) we had one that did and had to rehome him, the other two don't and pickels (the old boy) is about three years old so... its a matter of trying your luck.. also one only or they fight.
If they have algae and vegies to nibble on, they usually don't pick up the habit of sucking on the rays

@top dog ... amazing enough as busy as the rays are all the time, the other fish are not stressed by them at all and between Cesar and I, we have tried numerous different fish
The other fish are never a problem or scared of the rays, what you need to watch is that the fish you put in don't harass the rays.
You can try some of the fish I mentioned above and they will be fine

As for décor and hiding places, as long as its heavy enough or held in place properly, the rays wont injure themselves.. they too clever for that
They might try move things around but they very precise swimmers and don't just bash into things so you should be fine

It just happens with hybrids, they wont all look the same.. it all depends on how the genes prevail on each pup

However, they will still change a lot over time and they will also go darker
All three have a lot of morphing to do which is why this thread will be very interesting and educational in this respect

Glad to hear that @Ruben Fitton.
If your water is good and they not stressed, rays have an amazing ability to heal.

It’s a boy, tried for a girl but they were all taken, he is doing well, already, swimming around, was very weak and skinny though
Muddy doesn’t like the companionship, keeps on burying himself, hopefully he comes around
