I was hoping someone could help me ID these. At first i thought it was some kind of Dragonfly nymph but its not. It seems to be a filter feeder similar to brine shrimp although some of these were up to 1.5cm long with red tips on the tail. I found them in a shallow muddy pan (about 40cm at its deepest) in a Game reserve near Kruger Park. They were plentiful. I found some daphnia and other organisms as well. Since i have no idea whether this is a fresh water crustacean or not, i was hoping someone might know more about it. I have posted some pics.

I am not sure but i doubt it. If you look at the first picture, the one in the back have at least 8 to 10 limbs which are contimually moving as if filter feeding. The one in the second photo on the net is some sort of Damsel Fly / Dragon Fly nymph but those encircled in red ... does not seem like it to me. But im no expert. And unfortunately the photos aren't very clear

Yes, I see what you mean with the multiple limbs.

Yes the clam was alive, for some reason i didnt know whether it was uncommon or not, as i recall ive seen a few there over the years. By the way what is the situation in SA with Freshwater Clams / mussels etc? are they rare? i can believe that pollution might be threatening them?

I am going to try and upload a video of the "shrimps"

@Zoom, @Marco, @Rory, @Zebra Pleco - gents these are not illegal. They are not really shrimps. Just got a common name with shrimp in it. You can buy the eggs at most hobby shops.

@TankMaster Experilab used to sell their eggs for next to nothing. I believe it is possible to keep a breeding population.
