Hey folks, I'm wondering if anyone has experience keeping nerites and if they're worth the hype? A couple things I'm considering

    1. I've got a rimless tank, so I'm worried they'll climb out, how common is that?

    2. Do they eat green dust algae? I've got some on my hardscape that the amanos and cherries don't seem interested in. Will these guys work?

    3. How many would you recommend for a 40l tank. It's mostly plants, just a scattering of rocks and wood centrally

Any advice or feedback would be great! Thanks

In my experience, not worth the hype. They seem to die very easily. Getting more amano shrimp is an absolute win. I've collected more a d more over the years in my 250L tank and transferred 14 into a 100L tank which had bag green algae. They demolished it in a few days.

Amano shrimp are long-lived and very hardy in my experience.

Maybe throw in a hillstream loach for the green dust algae if amano aren't hungry enough.

    Hi there.

I've got Amanos and Nerite snails in my setup. Had my nerites for months now. All doing well, and they do a stellar job in my opinion.

They are notorious for just dying apparently, people recommend a higher pH for them (7-8), but I don't have my pH that high (base is around 7, dips during lights-on due to CO2 injection).

I do however use RO water which I then remineralize with Seachem Equilibrium to get to a GH of 6, my KH is around 2-3, but thus far they seem really happy and are growing nicely (I have a group of 3 in my 44l Nano).

Just a headsup... the one major thing that would sway me away from ever keeping them again, is that they lay hundreds of tiny sesame seed looking white eggs on all the hardscape (especially visible on my dark lava rocks), the eggs don't hatch, but it's just unsightly and difficult to get off of plants and hardscape.

Thanks for the advice, I've added some borneo loaches for the dust algae. Think I'll start the amanos on a diet too

I appreciate the help, thank you.

Didn't think of the eggs, might become more of a hassle than it's worth in my small tank.

Nerites also lay white eggs everywhere, which I never appreciated. They are too expensive for the limited value. Amanos and other shrimps work much better.
