Good day everyone. I recently bought a 290L tank. Busy renovating the cupboard first. Anyone have some ideas for me to make this tank look real nice? I'm using sand for the substrate. I also want to know what plants I can add with a pleco?

here is a pic of my pleco. Also... anyone have some cuttings for me for the new tank? I will highly appreciate it and will gladly pay to get it in Bloemfontein.

So this was the 16th of March 2018 when I bought the tank. Just some updates on it. Will most probably work on it again this weekend.

There was a purple plastic cover at the back of the cupboard but took it out. Going to add some pellets at the back.

This was on the 21st of March 2018. Taking some pellets apart.... (Hard work:eek:!!)

    My idea on this is...

I want to build a lid for the tank but going to do it with pallets (a bit heavy).
I'm thinking of covering the sides and the back of the aquarium with the wood (attached to the cupboard) so that the lid can rest on the wood itself and not on the tank.

Any inputs will be highly appreciated!

On the 3rd of April 2018 started with the cuttings of the lid and on the 4th of April 2018 we finished with the frame of the cupboard. Everything is build now so its only sanding, staining and varnishing left! SOoooOoOoo :D excited to see the end product!!

    That all looks very good!

Unfortunately plecos are rather destructive and sometimes will raze plants or eat from them depending on species. I'd recommend getting some wood or rocks then tying microsorum species to it, aka java ferns. There are a few varieties and it's quite common. Relatively undemanding and easy to grow as well, anubias is similarly easy to keep and is also tied onto decor.

What lighting will you run on here?

    Hope this helps :)

@Hendre I have some Anubias in my shrimp tank. If the Anubias is a bit bigger then I will maybe attache them to the shipwreck :) I also have some Java Moss I want to add to the ship.

I have a T8 light that i want to add in the tank.

Thanks for the advice on the plants. I will definitely look into the Java Ferns. I've read that the Java Ferns gives a bitter taste so that's why the plecos don't eat the Java Fern, the only thing is... here in Bloem the Java Ferns is soooooo expensive!

@f-fish Thanks for the compliment. I did not even think about the up-cycle method. I do have something like square tubing on the inside, you will see in the photo where there is old foam, the square tubing is under that.

I just want to add another piece of square tubing in the middle so that the tank is more stable. The square tubing is attached to the very strong legs that you can see at the bottom.

not too shabby a setup, in terms of plants for your pleco... java ferns are probably ur best option, other than that the pleco would probably destroy it.
    good luck further

Thank you Adam. Do you think the pleco will also destroy the Anubias?

most likely...sailfins like the one you have are notorious plant eaters, so its really your choice. I would go with a hardscape tho

Still need to put on 1 more coat of varnish and do the doors then it's finished.

I still need to clean the tank which have some water stains on it but hopefully another weekend or 2 then I can put in some water in the tank :D:D:D

This is where we are now... rookie mistake was... we did not think about the pallet wood thikness. We only checked the wood to not stand out on the out side of the tank and this resulted in the tank not fitting.. we need a whole 3cm space inside (length) for the tank to fit properly. The pallets stands out to much on the inside so I will need to sand them to be level with each other.
