so for a wile I've been looking at getting one but never came across one, about 3 weeks ago I was offered one and I could not resist and I ordered it. it arrive extremely skinny and I was lucky enough to have him eating on the second day of arrival. he comes to take his food from the tweezers as I would like to get him used to eating from the tweezers. also for him to associate the tweezers with food...
Before people smash me for how big he gets and so on, I do know all of this and have the new tank on the cards to be built before the end of the year... for now he is in the 3000l+ and will be there till the new tanks done....

I don't think that it is fair on the fish, this species grows up to three metres long and over 200kg! I saw a baby Goonsh catfish at a local dealer the other day which get even bigger! To me it's just wrong, sorry to say!

    Have a little gander ;)

Another thing to remember. Not all the fish reach the "max size". There's a huge array of environmental factors at play, and fish are extremely malleable when it comes to this. And also, out of the people on this forum I think Cesar is one of the best prepared to keep such a creature :)

I am sorry, but I don't agree. The Aligator Gar is now a protected species. From North America it is under threat from Asian Snake heads and Asian Carp.

I am also guilty as I do own some wild caught fishes, but at least not any which are threatened in the wild. Interestingly my Demasonis which were all captive bred; are threatened in the wild.

This is a somewhat controversial subject and well, I have strong views to this regard. In my opinion we as responsible aquarists should shun all wild caught species, in order to increase awareness.

Invasive species in general are creating huge problems with regard to our ecology and then removing threatened species from their natural habitat is only adding to the problem!

As far as I know platinum gars are captive bred, not wild caught.

The snow and platinum gars are bred in Thailand if I recall correctly.

    110% true.
These are captive bred and command a decent price, and wild gar have been threatened for a while due to humanity mainly. They were ruthlessly persecuted for some time..

I own a few wild caught fish, mainly species that have not ever been bred more than a couple of times. If at all properly recorded. Most gars are bred for the market now anyway..

@TrevorR Will you be sending you're Demasonis back to Pombo Rocks after that statement of them being threatened?

I have no problem with captive bred fishes, however I do have a problem with stunting a fishes growth to suit your needs! Maybe i will relocate my demasonis to the pombo rocks when i reitire one day! I started with around 30 which were captive bred at Israel. They have successfully bred and I now have around 100. Their broods are small but consistent.

Even when providing the best water quality and care fish won't reach their wild sizes in all cases... Stunting is a whole different case.
