So long story short was looking for something bigger than my 2-foot tank, browsed the second-hand market for weeks till I found someone selling a Jewel 125-second hand for R 3500. As it turns out it was too good to be true. When I went to go have a look it turns out to be the 60-liter model. So I went shopping and managed to find a brand new braced 4 foot with lid, stand, and 8KG's of black sand for R 3500. Couldn't pass up such a deal, but I have no idea what I want to do definitely not planted too much effort so thinking going cichlids. Had to move the 2 foot which was a bit of a mission:

Cleared up space for the new tank:

    And fits perfectly:

Been cycling since Saturday afternoon took all the hobs filters from my other tanks to seed it with bacteria:

I have a soft spot for Oscars I kept them for years before having to scale down. So most likely a single fish with a nice hard scape.

For filtration, I decided to ho HOB they had a special on the Aquaclear 110 which an absolute beast ding almost 2000 liters/ph. Bought a second one should I need spares down the line. All in all, still cost me less than a proper canister filter. R 2600 for both.

Was a bit of a bitch getting the canopy cut out without breaking it but I think it looks pretty good:

Well done - coming along nicely

    Huge fan of Aquaclear filters - I run 1 *110 and 2 * 70s on my 4ft cichlid tank.

Have been using an AC110 for 4 years now, wonderful filter. Not a huge fan of large cichlids like Oscars in a 4ft, but it's looking good so far.

Should be more than enough for a single fish. Not going to keep anything else.

for just a single oscar i think it is a great home.
keeping a single wet pet also makes the fish far more responsive
    good luck

Given how big and chunky oscars get, 120cm x 45cm isn't enough swimming room IMO. It's still pretty accepted in SA, but I am seeing it less overseas

Personally i wouldn't house a Oscar in a 4ft. there is allot of better options that you can put in that tank, Oscar fish deserves a 5ft.

Installed the night light since I know bigger fish spook easier when the lights are out, think it looks pretty cool:

Not much more than my 60 liter planted I am guessing. I am using the same lights, and the new filter is going to be the same wattage as the 3 filters I was already running.

Only difference is the heater going from a 150 too a 400 watt.

What is the price pm on electricity, I am new to the game, got a Dymax IQ7 and want to get a bigger tank this weekend as a second tank...just not sure what electricity would be for a rig like yours.

I limit myself to a single tank lol. Otherwise I'll go nuts. It also helps my pocket since I don't need to worry about other tanks.

I will definitely notice more power usage going from a small Dymax IQ7 to something like a 4 foot. But it's not the electricity that's going to break your bank its the rest of the hobby.

That's why I am moving away from planted too a species only tank.

you have a very valid point, I thought the fish would be the main cost, for the aquascape its the environment that has been a hit haha. I have a tetra 8.5 Watt LED light (on for 8 hours a day) and a tetra HT50 heater (hoping this has a thermostat) with a small dymax ph200 filter on 24/7 so hoping the cost is small for this haha. what makes a species only tank cheaper as I am wanting to get a little pea puffer, but they say these guys needs a lot of planted coverage to stimulate
