Is that even possible? I've been raising a lone baby something or other. I thought it was just a lucky survivor rasbora and relegated it to one of my guppy fry tanks. Checked the little guy just now, and his body shape and finnage is exactly that of a Boesemani rainbow. Do they breed in tanks? Cos that's my new project if they do..

That's great! I agree.. Very interesting fish, peaceful, colourful and active. The only reason they never made it to my highly rated list is because I thought they were wild caught, thereby not a renwable resource. Glad to see that's changed

Just read up about breeding Boesemani, and they really are very easy to breed. Just have enough fine vegetation for the eggs and fry to hide in and the parents won't even eat them if they're well fed. Such good news. Pics will follow:)

Well done on the spawning. I'm with Ryno on the spawning mops. Years ago I bred thread fin rainbows and spawning mops worked very well.

Thanks guys. As luck would have it, the pair is exhibiting spawning behaviour this morning. The male is very animated towards the female and he has a light dusted look on top of his head. This is apparently a tell-tail sign of imminent spawning.

I've placed them into a tank linked to their original tank(same water), but it's densely planted with HC, almost to the water surface. That should ok for them to lay eggs hey? I'll dump some Java moss later for the fry to hide in.

They were looking a bit skittish, so I did this...
    image.jpg

how long should I leave them to get bizzy makin lil Boesebabies?
There are a couple of hillstream loaches, Kuhli loaches and cobalt gobies in the tank.. Plus tons of shrimp. Will any of those be a problem?

Thanks Maria. I was hoping that it would make them more relaxed as they were very skittish in their new environment. Didn't work though. In fact, one managed to find a gap in the glass covers and jumped out last night. It's still alive, but the breeding attempt was clearly a fail. I'll post pics of the male's spawning colours shortly anyway.

Thanks @Broder... ok... I see your reasoning but the skittishnes was probably from being handled and moved around

Covering the tank was totally new to them so it stressed them out more. Im sure they will settle down in the next day or two.

Funny enough last winter I covered my tanks at night because we were having below zero temperatures and my Oscars and Severums are so laid back they didnt care but the more skittish fish didnt like it very much

Yeah, fish don't like being covered. That tank has enough hiding space if they want to go hide.

Thanks for that. I've removed the cladding and covered the top as much as possible. Let's just hope the jumper survives. Oddly enough it seems to be ok, even though was almost completely dry and only making sporadic half hearted gasps.

Yup... Thanks @Maria, yes the jumper is 100% fine and both have settled into the tank, even starting to eat again. Looks like the program is back on track. I'm totally stumped that the jumper recovered as rapidly as it did. It was almost dry when I picked it up. Just a little tacky is all. Must have been out of the water for at least 10 min. Was a very close call, but a reminder that all rainbows jump.

Glad he is ok and the program is back on track!!

I had a similar incident with my arowana, (she was only about 13cm) not long ago... I promise you those slidders only had about 3cm gap at most...
I was in the kitchen and my belgium shepherd girl (my shadow) was barking away in the lounge.. I still got cross with her a few times and eventually I went and look at what she was barking and it was my arowana on the floor!! So she was actually calling me.. I was VERY LUCKY..
