You have a point there. Never thiught about that. Looking at the specs of the light it might not be overkill. Rated at 40L/m where I currently run about 20L/m. Good price also.

Don't think you can over UV ... and it is a bit of an inline heater also ;-)

Think @Pezulu did something like this a while back when he had green water.

Thanks. At the moment I'm just getting them, with the raising we will have to wait and see how it goes.

I think you need some prof powder. That stuff is bomb. Are you near Marco? He may have some Sp1 or Sp2 for them

    Wow @pierreschoonraad !!!!

    That is awesome!!

I have taken Hikari cichlid sinking pellets and couple massivore and ground them up to powder, using that and the babies are doing well

    Thanks @TheGrissom and @MariaS.

No problem yet with the wc but it will come. At the moment I will keep the water as stable as possible. When they grow bigger that is where the problems start but worth it.

Up until now I am extremely lucky regarding them surviving. Both the tank that they were hatched in and is in now. Is tanks that have been running for at least a year. Their current tank is bare bottom but there is wood and moss in it, I can't stand a bare tank even for breeding purpose, and it is a nice supply of zooplankton for new fry. I'm going to ground some of my Ocean Nutritian Formula One Marine pellets fir them, as they are high in protein, and see how that goes. The bigger the variety the better.

Should work. I used to grind up sinking pellets using a mortar and pestle for my threadfin fry before I changed to micro worms. Just make sure to get a nice homogeneous powder going to avoid larger pieces not being eaten.

Thanks. Will defnitly need to be fine cause anything that sinks don't get eaten by the fry. It needs to be suspended in the water for as long as possible. Good thing I have cull shrimp in that tank to clean up. The Rainbows will repay them, when they get bigger, by eating them up.

You know what has been working quite well for me?
When I took @Pezulu's babies, i also took two of his bristlenose plecos.. but they were way too small to risk putting them in the big tanks so i put them with the fry and boy oh boy they wolf up everything that the babies dont eat plus their own food
Up side as well is that no fry has gone missing either

I have some guppy fry in a tank, with loads of cull shrimp.
Microworms, BBS and Hikari First Bites all sink to the bottom, where the shrimp are getting extremely fat munching on all the leftovers.

Those foods are also excellent for shrimp growth, as the shrimp have seemingly doubled in number since the fry were born on 19/06/2018.

If you can find some, Otto's will also work.
Ancistrus will also work, as they grow quite slowly, and shouldn't pose a threat to any fry.

Thank. Good to know. For the time being I'm just sticking with the shrimp. At some point they would have become a meal for the Rainbows in any case.

Update time. Since my last post I lost quite a lot of fry. The reason for this I can't pin point. At the moment I guess, very difficult to count them, that there is just over 20 fry left. This is a huge dissapointment to me but I will learn from this for future breeding.

Feeding microworms and powdered pellets at the moment. Ifusoria is almost ready so that will help in the live food department.

Hopefully the numbers will stay stable over the next few weeks.

Still - just getting to this point has been a good experience with loads of learning along the way.

At the size of those fry I think it was pure luck you spotted any of them.

20 fry is better than 0 fry...
They may surprise you yet again, and at least now you know how to get them going.
You may consider feeding microworms from the start, and have infusoria at hand the next time you attempt a breeding.

Sorry you lost so many but 20 is still an achievement. I always found the first 3 or so weeks to be the critical stage, after which most of them seem to survive. Its still a learning experience, next time perhaps you will manage to get a higher survival rate
