    Hi guys

Just could not resist to show off this little guy. I think he or she is beautiful. I decided to name him Gizmo.

He was sold to me as a figure 8 puffer but after lots of research I found out its a green spotted puffer.

So far my most exciting addition to the new fish room.[IMG][IMG][IMG]

    Hello Gizmo.

Very cute. Puffers seems to be the trending fish at the moment.

It was sold to me as a fresh water fish but thier is a lot of conflicting information on the internet. I do add salt tp my tanks so at present he is alone in a very big 1.5m tank as did not yet have any where to put him plus one of the small tanks leaked on the weekend so i had ro move things around a little.

I need to do more research on him becuase even the info on tank mates is conflicting. So at present he us on his own. He seems very happy and active. I have ordered a bunch of snails for him and hopefully i can breed a couple hundred of them as well in a separate tank then i will have a constant food source for him.

What a beaut! I love puffers. I'd love to get some dwarf ones but they would destroy the shrimp I want to keep.

Got one to, but they are so tiny. At present he/she is in a community tank but its tiny like the size of a pea. In fact again it was sold as a dwarf puffer, but i think its a pea puffer.

Its very timid and hides most of the day.[IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG][IMG]

    @David Kusner
    Nice Puffer
It would probably be a bit happier if you could add a few more of his kind to the tank

As far as I am aware, most GSP available are the brackish species.
There is a fresh water species, but unusual to see it.
Perhaps @SalmonAfrica could shed further light.
Most puffers don't tolerate tank mates well, and are probably best as species only.

    Hi @David Kusner

That looks to be a Green Spotted Puffer, which do pop up at stores from time to time. There are another two species of "green spotted" puffer, but are rare and you'd know you are getting them by the price tag alone. There are subtle differences in body shape and colouration, too, but at a glance very similar.

You are absolutely right about conflicting information online, although I can speak from experience that Green Spotted Puffers do require salt, to some degree at the very least. Very young individuals don't mind fresher water, it seems, but as they grow they appear to need increasing salinities. This isn't to say that you need to go full marine for adults - although many people can and do transfer them to full marine - the adults of this fish are happy enough for long-term in water with a specific gravity of 1.010.

GSP kept in fresh water for extended periods appear to do well enough for some time, but eventually start losing appetite, slowed growth, poor colouration, and usually a shortened lifespan.

They can do well with other fish - or even others of their own species - but you need space and you need decor. The space lets everyone keep out of the way if they need to, and the decor provides hiding spaces and breaks lines of sight (you can't fight someone you can't see!). Many stores throw all their GSP into a single tank, and you will see the results; one or two skinnier fishes, chunks out of fins, and shy behaviour.

As for the pea puffer, also often sold as dwarf puffer, (same thing IMO) you need to be feeding them well and regularly. They burn a ton of energy and need constant replenishment. If you can get more individuals, you will see a change in behaviour, as they spend their time monitoring their spaces, interacting, and if you provide a big enough snail, hunting in groups.

Enjoy your puffers! They're among the most rewarding fish available to the hobbyist.
