Hey guys moved my tank today to make some space for the other one once its done, so I drained but kept the water so that it can be easy to move.

Then as I took the heater out so that the rock doesn't fall on it I saw it ...
    What is this?

Forgive the strange hours I respond and ask questions but unfortunately for me I work shifts.

I kinda panicked when I saw it. IMG-20211122-WA0001.jpg

That heater looks like it's fried to be honest.. I'm amazed it even still worked. That actually looks like water got in and it blew

It must have had a slow leak and so got filled with water. They actually carry on working for a very short while then burn out. Chuck it out and buy a new one. Heaters are cheap and all the same quality. IMHO all heaters are the same. They are all made in China and are no longer made to last for years on end.

I usually keep spare ones on hand and also I always connect my own external thermostat control as I dont trust them either in that regard to keep the temp accurate.

    Agree with the others
    Heater looks fried.

I would buy the best brand you can afford
Have read of many cases where people cut corners on equipment. But it's what's keeping your fish alive

Hi thanks guys it says submersible but yeah Im definitely going back to the petshop because I have it for less than 6 months and this is the only heater they had at my local petshop but ill do some research on the external thermostat because my son named all of them so it would break his and my heart to loose a fish because of this.

    Thanks so much

This is excellent news. The brown on the bottom I'm guessing was algae I assume

Well technically diatoms is what I was referring to which is not exactly an algae. I agree with @A new day maybe a pic of it all cleaned up would help. To be honest from the pics uploaded the "dirt" looked like it was on the inside which is why I am sure everyone thought it's fried. However, come to think of it, I had a heater that looked like that (on the inside) , and still worked but the once I put my hand in to do something I got a real wake up call. It was a shock that literally threw me to the floor screaming like a little child .
