silkworms

hey as i'm sure u know by now i have an arowana and he's coming along very nicely.i'm trying to vary his diet,at the moment its predominately crickets,his tank mates and iv seen him grudgingly take some floating sticks.i also threw in a fly and 2 moths which he nearly took off the tank lid catching.i remember keeping silkworms in durban all that goes with them feeding them beetroot leaves to get red silk and all that and eventually they would cocoon themselves and one would get moths a while later so my question is does it sound viable and if so it possible in jhb has anyone seen any around?

 

If you need a mulberry tree let me know... Don't know where to find the worms though.

got my silkworms,they gettin on perfectly should start cocooning themselves very soon i hope,then will start on my next batch.

Silkworm Pupae is one of the best fish foods I have found,ever - mean protein content of about 52% and the silk proteins are awesome for colour developedment in fish(my koi can atest to that!!)...You can buy freeze dried kilo packs of it from the better grade koi shops - fed to tropicals it should go quite far as it is expensive - about R350 a kilo....

Trick is to feed the pupae or even the catterpillars while they are spinning - highest silk protein content during this time...The Chinese(who make the product) freeze dry them the same day as they are finnished spinning - pupae uses the proteins to faccilitate the change to moth...less yummyness in'em when the hatch from pupae....try some - sure you will see the growth spurt in your Arrie....Hmmn - gonna be time for a new tank soon....
One of the coolest sights ever was of a pond in Taiwan with about 20 adult Arries in @ feeding time....will NEVER forget that one....

Other protein crammed snack can be bought from any LPS that sells tarantulas....Cockroaches - double the protein value of crickets....Thats if youre not to squeamish to handle a roach or two...lol...
