    I am after the opinion of other monster fish keepers on the forum.

    My tank setup is a 5x2x2 (550L)
    stocked with a South American Lungfish and some SA cichlids.
    I have the opportunity to buy a pair of hystrix stingrays. Disc size gets to about 10 inches. This is one of the smaller species.
    I think my tank will be ok for the Rays.
    Just not sure if they will be compatible with the lungfish.

    The display tank that the lung came from had Rays in it too. But the tank was bigger than mine.

    Good evening Reedfish

    from my experience with keeping rays and south American cichlids, the only problem you will come across is at feeding time. the cichlids will steel the food before the rays can get
    to them. so you will have to keep an eye on that. as for getting along, you will have no problem.
    As for the tank size, also think you will be ok.

    found this about keeping lungfish and rays..
    South American and Australian Lungfish
    South American lungfish (Lepidosiren paradoxa) and Australian lungfish (Neoceratodus forsteri) are the two most docile species of lungfish and seem to get along well with stingrays. These fish have powerful jaws, however, and one bite has the potential to cause serious damage to a ray or even kill it. Be very cautious with this combination. Below: A South American lungfish swims with a group of P. reticulata and P. orbignyii

    don't know much on the lung fish.. hope this helps.
    as for keeping rays, you will be very happy.

    @Cesar,
    Thanks for the advice. The lung was very expensive. As are the Rays.
    And they are fantastic fish.
    Would break my heart if it went wrong.

    @ Reedfish.. you are welcome and I hope it helped... well at the moment I have my three rays in a grow out tank that is 1.7x600x700. substrate is pfs as it is a fine sand, due to them liking to burrow themselves you want to stay away from gravel that has sharp edges. filtrating consists of a C2400 as well as a sump that runs a 5000l return pump.. you need a strong current to be able to lift there waste as it is quite heavy and bulky... as for deco I have a large piece of vine wood with some java fern attached to it, reason for the vine and not driftwood is I wanted the floor space. like I said I have three rays now, two females and the one male. rose and ray were my first two, got them eating on earth worms in the beginning to fill there belly's up. now I have gotten them onto Hake fillets that are cut up into strips that they can fit into there mouths.. they have both grow a large amount from the min they moved over to the fish, Ray is now close to 25cm disk size with Rose a little smaller.. the new one that was more of a rescue case from the local pet shop is still very small at about 10cm.. could not bare the site if seeing the little one with his disk all damaged. so she went home and got treated with salt and healed up real good. now eats like a little piggy... at the moment I only have the rays in this tank as I am waiting for my RTG to arrive this week.. as a matter of interest as well some people tend to think that Ray are inactive bottom dwellers that tend to just lay on the bottom of the tank, however they are not and are very active swimming around the bottom, mid layer and along the glass of the tank.. I have in the past kept them with Geos, clown loach, Sevrums and flagtail... the only reason for removing them was I would like to get them to bread in the long run... hope this helps..

    @Cesar,

    Thanks for your detailed reply.

    My tank is a bit smaller than yours, but not much.

    My main concern is the Ray/Lung mix
    I have tried to do as much reading as possible over the past few days
    And as usual, with info on the net, there is so much conflicting advice.

    Some people say that you need giant tanks with no tank mates and they will eat anything and everything they will get their "teeth into".
    Others say a 5ft is fine. And I have seen plenty of photos with all sorts of tank mates.

    Similarly, some people say they are really sensitve to water conditions/ parameters. And others that they are as tough as anything.

    Here is the 2:

    @Reedfish, they gorgeous!!!!! You will love having them!! heheh

    I agree with you.... sometimes the more research you do on tank mates the more confused you get due to conflicting opinions.....

    I also think that each fish also has its individual character which we often forget....

    You mentioned that the lungfish came from a tank with rays? Do you know for how long it had been in with the rays? Maybe that could give some idea?

    @MariaS,
    Yes, they are nice. Hence why I am so so so so so tempted!

    The tank that my lung came from, which had the Rays, was bigger than my tank
    I have called the lfs and to ask them their opinion, but the expert there is away until tomorrow.

    @Reedfish... I agree with you 100%, when it come to the internet you need to take what you read with a pinch of salt.. If I was in your shoes I would give it a day and chat the expert at the lfs and see what he has to say.. they are stunning though... I have also done some reading and cant seem to find any solid info to a yes you can or no you cant...

    Spoke to the expert at the lfs today.
    He said to me, if it was him, he would give it a go.
    But of course he couldn't guarantee it would be ok

    So now, I have to make a decision :confused:

    @Reedfish.... Not an easy one.... I feel for you!!!
    Taking into consideration that the lung fish lived with raysbefore and therefore the rays behaviour should not startle him/her, I wouldprobably be tempted to give it a try.... taking the following intoconsideration which I am sure you will too as you are no newbie tofishkeeping....
    How big is the lung fish now, versus the rays?
    What is the growth rate of the lung fish compared to that ofthe rays?
    How heavily stocked with other SA Cichlids is the tank?
    If I gave it a go, in my case, I would take rays home on a Fridayso I could monitor the behaviour over the weekend.
    And also... how understanding and accommodating would thelfs be, should it not work out?
    We have been lucky to have an excellent relationship withthe one lfs and when in a situation as this one, he has always been agreeableto the condition of returning he fish should there be a problem.
    I know its not what you want to happen but.... it gives youthe opportunity to try....
    I guess you will have to go with your heart....

    @MariaS,

    Thanks for the support!

    The Lung is about 2 1/2 ft long.
    The Rays disc size must be about 10 inches or so

    There are quite a few Cichlids in the tank - Geophagus, Angels and those Chocolates I am growing out.
    But if I need to thin out the numbers, it wouldn't be a problem

    Not sure what the lfs policy is re returning the Rays if there is a problem
    Am going to phone them later and see what they say.

    @Reedfish....

    Have to agree with Marias.
    If it was me, I would be mad enough to go for it. and in any way if does not work out you are more than welcome to send them my way lol..
    jokes aside from what I have read, if the lungfish is fed well and not starving it will not bite out of aggression...
    Hope to see the pics of your new kids soon...

    @Cesar,

    My main concern is that as it's a relatively well stocked tank, the activity of the lungifsh will stress the Rays

    Don't think it will be tempted to attack them.
    There are some really small fish in the tank (lemon tetras - left over from my Discus days) and he doesn't want to eat them.

    @Reedfish... I have to say that from my experience with the rays, they don't mind the activity at all... I also have to say that my rays are never still and always swimming around... as for your tetras you might find they slowly vanish as your rays get bigger. I had added 15 penguin tetras to my ray tank to add something on the upper levels of the tank and they were all gone in about 3 days.. so as for the small fish you might want to look at that...

    I am about to phone the lfs to see when the manager is there.
    Don't want to deal with an "underling" when I go collect the Rays.......

    I can always give the Tetras to a friend of mine.

    What about cichlids (my young chocolates) about 7/8 cm
