    Hi all.

    I have read a few articles that suggest a lifetime of about 18months for substrate.

    IYO:
    1. what is a good time to keep Sub
    2. Is this the same for Aquasoil, Flourite etc.
    3. Does DIY sub last longer or shorter
    4. How long do substrate additives ADA Green etc. last?

    In nature occasional flooding will refresh, turn over the substrate, wash away mulm. We do this through vacuuming and WC.
    Should I be following a more strict regime? Replacing substrate every x months (and my Crypts have just settled down :( )

    Thanks

    I have never heard of this dude, about 10 years ago when I had 4 tanks I used my same substrate for years.

    Gravel vacs and WC is all that is needed.

    @Jaybirdlark,

    I have also read that the nutrients last from a year to 18 months. After that I guess you have to supplement with fertilizers.
    As I don't have a planted tank, I can't comment further.

    Flourite® never has to be replaced. It remains effective for the life of the aquarium. :cool:

    @hvivers75
    have a look at ADA products and you will see these substrates are little round mud balls.
    These have a life span.

    @Jaybirdlark
    ADA and other similar products will be basically based on when the round balls melt
    They will break now and then when you replant or Gravel Vack so really to say it lasts 24 months (will be reckless)
    I mean that if you treat it badly but if you very Careful (seeing its soooo expensive) then it may last longer
    It just to the person who is taking care of it.

    Hope that helps
