    Hi Guys,

I bought a Via Aqua internal filter last weekend. The sales guy told me it is a 3 stage filter. When i opened it up i see it's only a 2 stage filter, Foam and Carbon.
I'm back in the hobby after 15 years. Previously i had a 3 stage AquaClear with the Biomax stage.

    A few questions:

    1) Do i need a 3 stage filter for a 200 l Tropical Tank
    2) Can i add some sort of Bio into the ViaAqua
    3) Should i retuen this filter and buy a 3 stage

    Thanks

On a 200L tank I would rather invest in either a good canister filter, or one of the larger Seachem Tidal HOB filters.
You can't go wrong with either a Cascade of Dophin canister filter.
The Seachem Tidal are easy to use, bur require a bit more maintenance, as they have an indicator that tells you when they need cleaning.

I agree with @Pezulu. I think 200L is pushing the boundries for a HOB filter but I haven't seen the specs on the seachem. Ultimately you want to move 3-4 times your tank volume in an hour through your filter so anything pushing 600l/h would be a good bet. In terms of brand there are many good ones out there and basically comes down to budget and preference. Without breaking the bank I would gladly advise Cascade or Dophin to anyone. HTH

    Thanks for the replies guys.
I was doing some window shopping over the weekend, Canister its going to be. Brand to be decided on.

The ViaAqua i have is rated at 1000 l /hr but mot sure if i can trust the specs as very little info can be found on the net.

A HOB along with a canister is also a good idea ... especially if you do not want to use your canister for things purigen or water polishing.
