Blacklisted as far as I know.

Also note these are not all that easy to keep and require a very large tank with soft sandy bottom.

Only ones I have ever seen in SA, was at the Pretoria aquarium about 25 years ago.

Would love some myself, but have to respect their listing and their requirements.

And the one on the left, blue-spotted stingray, is actually a marine stingray, not freshwater.

Can't always have what we want :) . Please clarify, the one for sale was the one on the left or right. The one on the right is a freshwater species, NEVER seen in the trade in SA. I would drive to wherever just to see it. The marine one is much more common.

Was in the Berlin aquarium in March, - they have some nice ones there. Amazing creatures.

Freshwater stingrays are supposed to be blacklisted in South Africa. I have personally seen 2 of them in Johannesburg. It is the Brown one though. It's called the Motoro Stingray, Potomotrygon motoro.

The reason they are blacklisted, is because they're venomous. Stingrays kill more people around the world than sharks on a yearly basis.

One of our local shops had a small freshwater stingray a week back R2000. Was ordered for someone, apparently the idiots that maintain the guys tank decided to put it in the malawi tank ... RIP stingray.

I have seen some for sale every now and again, there was a petshop in PTA that used to import them often, but either they got caught or they stopped selling them as people would buy them and return them once they got too big. Honestly, I feel that all fish that get over 20cm should be blacklisted, or require a competency certificate

there are smaller varieties, like the schumacheri i think it is about the size of a large oscar, which i dont see on the blacklist.and yes they are poisonous but are they any more dangerous than the snakes for sale everywhere you look.
