Why do female guppies eat their young?

Can anyone explain why the mother of the fry is intent on snacking on them? I'm just curious cos the other guppies are ignoring the fry. It's just the mother eating them?

 

Well, I can't speak for the fish, but in humans it goes something like this.

When your children are just born, they are so cute you could eat them up. When they get to be teenagers, you sort of wish that you had...

 

Might be that the female guppies stomach has space to expand again so she feels hungry, the other fish are happy because they are full??

 

IMHO I think it's a genetic trait,because endlers don't eat their own babies.:idea:

Yeah, Dewald, I also think it must have something to do with all the inbreeding, cos it certainly can't be a trait in favour of the survival of the species.
