Discus don't like bacteria, so cutting down waste in the water and wiping off bacterial film on the tank does help apparently.
pH pens are pretty inaccurate even if calibrated properly, especially with the softer water in Cape town. Let your water "gas off" for 24 hours....
That's way too small for that many pea puffers imo, I think some tiny schooling fish would contribute nicely to the overall scale
