U can get them from most decent LFS in CT.
I would try to get some brine shrimp eggs and hatch them, live food usualy gets new picky fish to eat and is good for them too.

That has to be the coolest tank i have ever seen...
It depends on the amound of ammonia/ fish making poo in the tank. Thing to remember is that the plants will be staying in the tank absorbing...

Yip this should help your tank to cycle faster... Just be sure not to add all your fish in one go, i would suggest that AFTER cycling your tank...

I used to have a pair, the male was almost a foot long and the female about 25cm, wonderfull fish with lots of character.
No Prob, I have black sand in all my tanks and i find that the fish seem "happier" and their colours come out more with a dark substrate...
