    Hi Franke,

I've also learned a few lessons from buy plants at pet shops and only finding out that it isn't really Aqurium plants. The best is to either purchase plants on betterweather or search plants on the net before you buy them. On the forum under aquarium plants there is two post with a complete list of low tech and med to high tec plants. It tells you actually what you will need to do to succefully grow the plants. Example: light requirements, fertilizer co2 and so on. It will also tell witch what plants needed to be planted and which to be tide to logs or something. Or ask the guys on the forum you will always get a few opinions. Sometimes you just need to make your own assumptions.

You've got sufficient light, but I would consider in changing your gravel. Plants prefer a finner gravel. If you look at the substrate that Flourish provides it has a fine to medium coarse texture. Flourish is just very expensive but you can use pool filter sand or if you looking for a redish or black sand let me know I can help you out.

Start off off by using flourish and excel from Seachem and maybe a Trace, when your plants starts to grow and you adding CO2 then you can add the rest. Phosphorus , potassium , nitrogen, and iron. You can also use the tablets from the begining. I've tried out a couple of products and with Seachem I've had the best results, but isnt the cheapest product though.

Get a timer on your lights that they always switch on and off at the same time, and don't over stock your tank with fish. It all has to do with your nitrate and nitrite levels.

Good luck with your tank "all efforts will be rewarded"

MattLamm here is a closeup of the plec, the faded parts on his body can change color, sometimes its faded and other time very dark. If anyone else can help with an ID I would appreciate it. I am going to change over to pool filter sand for substrate and dose Seachem excel and flourish going forward thanks guys. Can anyone help with the ID on the plants as well, its only the 5 different types.
