What about adding a HMF filter rather?

have a good size pump on say a 5cm thick open cell sponge - run it floor to top in one of the corners. That is huge mechanical filtration ... I am slowly but surely becoming a disbeliever in biological filtration in well planted tanks ... so it depends on what you want to do with the tank in the end. I think we have been conned that our tropical tanks need to be as complicated as the marine setups. Or maybe we are just to impatient and want every thing to grow and die at its max ... ggl gave me this as a nice HMF corner picture ...

Is there a DIY on this? And explained? Want to see what does on in there.
My father now wants to go with oscars in there. His choice.
But i want to go with a Mbuna tank, if its not too small

Yeah thats another problem. Neen told you need this and this for this reason!!!! My head is going to pop off!.
But in the end its just to have a tank running with no problems with water, equipment ect!

Got all the sand clean....25ks....think i might need and extra 10 or 15 more.

And a pic of all the stuff i got plus plants, think there is just over 30, all in 3ft tank for now with the canister filter running on it.

Going to have very simple plants, no pfp this time

@larch Read a few websites on it, no complains. Also Carel has never had any come-backs.

@Apoc Yeah and many hours of work lol

All i need now is 15kgs more of substrate and my sliders then i can start filling up.
It was dark last night (No SHT!) so im not 100% sure if i got the substrate 100% clean. Going to have to alot of water changes

    Forgot to add.

Will be getting an angel pair once tank has cycled. Then will just add 2 SAE and a few tetras. Keeping it very simple

Lol well i didn't have much access to the forum to wait for replies.

Only getting rest of sand tomorrow night. Going to fill tank up to night.

Should i full half up 1st, wait a day and fill the rest? A bit concerned due to the fact its been empty for quite some time.

Maybe fill it a little bit at a time and check for leaks.

Since you cant visit I will take pictures and show you have I set up my ViaAqua:

Mine has 3 baskets and the the canister itself has a capacity of around +-20 liters (for water)

My third basket I filled with clay balls:

    The second with ceramic rings:

And the first with 3 different types of filter media going from coarse to fine:

I dont think it is necessary to fill every basket to the brim mine are all just half filled way considering just how big the ViaAqua's baskets are.

For my outlet I did not use the spray bar or that silly "shuffle" attachment I took the parts from the spray bar (the two elbow pieces) and made a custom outlet (see crappy picture below)

What you can also do is add a small piece of pipe to lower the outlet deeper into the tank I kept mine at the surface to keep the water to the surface.

@larch thanks for the info. My ceramic rings isn't fulled right to the top, its also about half.

Regarding the connecting shown in your sketch and pic, i will see later on if i will do that. After adding the the canister to the main tank the pressure seem to work its self out.

A pic so long. VERY CLOUDY!!! and other way to remove this besides w/c? i know it will eventually go away but so will my patience lol

I never really thought about this part.....Canister does not fit:banghead: Lol

Ha,ha - canisters always look SO much smaller in the shops...lol

Dont worry - tank will be clear in a day or two - just change/wash your mechanical part of the canister a coupla times a day...

Sounds fine... you just got to get rid of the suspended sollids...the more you clean, the quicker the tank will clear... no matter how much we wash our substrate, their is always some clouding... the more you clean the mechanical - the quicker it goes...

PS: With you being away on hols, you missed my paludarium build...lol - check it out ssome time and let me know what you think... Setting up that 2.5 footer I got from you this week... got some Endlers coming soon...he,he

    ---------- Post added at 20:01 ---------- Previous post was at 20:01 ----------

@larch ... In other words you just waited for the suspended sollids to settle out,or do they have some of those mechanical cartridges at the intake?

I took the cartridge attachments and filled them with filter wool and batting and attached them to the power heads.

Sounds good. Still got to add about 15kgs more......i hate this part but then again its always rewarding afterwards.

I briefly went through it, had a headache at the time. But saw the pics, its look awesome! Probably better in real life right?

Dont have any power heads at this time....Plus the budget is getting to its end now, will just wait and see
