got a umbee a few months back that was really beaten up and should not have taken him home, but sadly emotion won over sense and he did not make it. The store who imported him imported these two guys to make up for ill fated first imported

would have to agree there, thou most full on predatory cichlids only come into there own from 25cm plus, find them quite shy and sneaky till then. Probably evolution telling them to mind there manners as there parents are around and hungry. Unlike omnivores types that angry from 10cm plus.
Small midas will bully and control small dovii till the dovii puts on some size but dovii will eat anything that it can overpower from fry sized but will back away from fights. recon jags and umbee full into same category as dovii and once they hit adult size can not be kept with anything you not prepared to loose at some point including females of same species.

Nice. I have a question I've never found proper answer too. What is the difference between midas and red devil?

short brief answer same family different species
both members of amphilophus genus made up of 23 odd species sadly in sa we do not see the rest
as a guide midas thicker body more rounded shape and more depth shape of a rugby ball with far more U shaped mouth and flat ( curve to head
red devil thinner more stream lined shape of body more american football V ball shaped mouth and > shaped head

in the hobby most fish you see are called MiDevils as they are cross bred with no reference to where or what original parents where. these hybrids are still dam cool.
true midas i have from wild caught stock out of pta zoo, unless i import my self from USA based supplier would not trust fish store labels
