Any of you guys use or thought of using this?

Next question: How long do these last? Surely they have a lifespan?

@Zoom, from the quick reading I did this morning, Seachem says they last a year, but those who have used it say they replaced them every 6-9 months

 

If they are reasonalby accurate as mentioned earlier I really don't mind replacing them every 6-9 months...

 

It also depends on any chemicals that get added to the water, that can shorten their life span, ph is 3 - 6 months and ammonia is 12 months those are +- figures like I say depends on your tank.

But they do discolour when they start going off and you can buy replacement sensors apparently which work out a bit cheaper and you just remove the old sensor and stick a new one on. But you should get hold of @Altum and confirm.

 

I saw these at my LPS and will be getting one since Ive already had one bad ammonia spike with my goldies. They where not that badly priced, about R90.

 

anybody found any of these in gauteng yet, or gotten prices from Altum?
I havent seen them in Pretoria yet, just cheap knock-offs

@JungleAquatics have them. You can buy a combo pack from them that includes the amonia and ph. Not so sure about the price but was not expensive. I think

 

The prices of the combo pack are usually from R100 - R150. They work pretty well. I have found the PH one stops working for me after about 2 - 3 months. But that's fine. I can get another one.

 

Wasnt impressed with them to be honest. The pH needs to change by about 0.8 degrees before you actually notice the colour change as the colours are all very close, and its near impossible to actually see the colour correctly. When you look at the colour, and compare it with the chart around it, you guestimate that the pH is between 7.4 & 6.8 because you cant cleary see what it is really.

And lets face it, by the time you notice the change, the fish are long into pH shock, or ammonia poisoning.

I suppose thats why they call them 'alerts'.
