Myself - I succesfully bred over 100 species and both these were bred from wild stock - so I know the hard way.

Firstly, great that you want to do a workshop and educatethe public.

However… is it seriously necessary to charge people forthis?

People spend so much money buying fish, plants, etc. fromyou guys, wouldn’t it be fair to just give something back for once?

Due to human behavior it is unfortunately a Necessity. R50 does not cover even 20% of the costs, but my experience is if you do not charge there is no obligation to attend. We had similar experiences and less than 50% actually pitched, this mean 50% other hobbyists was BLOCKED from a brilliant opportunity. There is only 16 seats and I want hobbyists to actually attend, not just book and then don't pitch.

Make it an open invite for all that wants to learn from you. The serious people will definitely go, and there will be no one that gets "blocked". even the beginners will be there, maybe only 50% of them, but at the end of the day you will have more people... But it is still not necessary to charge IMO.

You say your cost for hosting and presenting this workshop is in excess of R4000? let me guess, chairs costing you lots to rent? conference center? why not just present at the shop... tell people to bring their own chairs, and you provide refreshments. a 500ml coke each x 30 people = Max R500. Tell people to bring pen and paper, you provide a printed agenda sheet, etc. wont cost you more than R100. The store won't even have to fork out more than R1k, and what is R1k when 30 people walk out of the store happy and satisfied, recommending your store to others because of what you did.?

Look, Moolis, you should be trying to grow the hobby not just by taking, but also by giving. :amuse:

@Chongkie - Your opinion have been noted. I am not going into a long discussion with you.

If anyone can not afford the R50 - PM me and I would subsidize you personally.

Pitty - these could have been a great addition to breeding only guppy's.

My intentions is to help people to become successful breeders of rare or expensive species i know we could produce ourself. ;)

Grossly unfair statement. Moolis often has events/specials where he gives away free gifts as well as free livestock (both marine and tropical) to hobbyists in his shop, how many shops do you know that have done that once, let alone on numerous occasions? He has always supported us when having events, take the Aquarium Expo in JHB for example, stands, transport, staff, accomodation etc costs thousands to attend, often for much less in return but exposure and growing the hobby. He has also written many magazine articles and always fights for the hobby at SAPTA. Moolis deserves a lot of credit for what he is doing and what he has done in the past. I don't see anyone else taking the initiative to do things like this. I'm sorry but your comments are way out of line. :)

Hey guys, lets just consider that as stated this way merely an "opinion" by @Chongkie that was shared which is fair enough, probably should have left it there...

This is a hobby, its something people choose to do, it costs money every day to get it right and to keep it right and we all willingly accept that.
Lets also not forget that this is a hobby for most of us, this is actually a business and livelihood for others. Knowledge is also a commodity, it has value and justifies a fee beyond the basic cost of the event.
I personally would gladly pay R50 to attend this and I am also thinking about the aforementioned investment opportunity, we could do with an outlet like theirs down here....

    Peace, ladies an gents.

Granted that I do not personally know moolis or what he has done for this hobby. However this was by no means an attack on him personally.

As I have said, it is great to do a workshop and to educate the public. But charging for this I personally feel is not necessary. Moolis has noted this and hopefully will consider this for the future workshops.

Regarding how petstop does marketing, ie. Free fish , specials, etc. Is done by majority of petshops. But this is also based on the customers buying to receive something in return. Theoretically, not free.

I've seen member, from this forum, that invite people to show them how to scape a planted tank. More than half a day was spent, and no one asked for anything. Whoever had the time or was interested went.

The point is, @Zebra Pleco, to educate the people that are really interested in the hobby should not cost anything. Yes there are overheads and expenses, but I personally believe that the satisfaction of the customers outweigh the expenses, especially when the business is making money.
