People are funny when it comes to buying custom made items. Being in the building industry, I have learnt that how you sell comes down to how you market. My suggestion is based on my knowledge of "custom paying" customers, as based on the assumption that you have the capital to make up a few stands.

I would personally do the following:

Make up a few 3ft stands complete as you have shown, and get some LPS to put it in their shop on consignment. For the bigger and better stores, perhaps put in a 4ft. Then on the back board have printed a "shopping list" of what can be added, and the price per each item. You could also have a "buy this demo model for: R 123 for that impulse buyer who wants what he sees right now... but then you need to have a spare one available in your workshop to deliver a new demo model to the shop within a few days.

I, for example, love the look of the tank, but I would request 2 x multiplugs, and would request that the lighting be upgraded to 4 tubes.
You may get someone who opts for a cutout to be made for a sump design.
You may get someone who wants their timber in passion pink.

My solution with fussy "custom clients" is very simple... give them a BASIC standard, with options to add on. And now comes the sneaky part to sweeten the deal... for every add-on, you offer a 1 or 2 % discount on the overall price. So let's say I add on 3 more tubes, and an additional multiplug. That's 4 add ons, so you offer me 4-8% discount on the overall price. But you need to be savvy with this because if you are not priced right, you could loose your entire profit margins just by a few add-ons, or you could land up with no sales because the add-on's are too expensive.

Hi All,

As you all know, @Nirvashen has been building my cabinet for me.

So today was collection day and all I can say is WOW!

I sent him my design for the stand and it was built 100% to the designs. I am particularly pleased with the finishing touches they did on the stand and this only shows the true craftsmanship that has been used to build this stand.

I also really appreciated when he contacted me telling me that he would rather change something in the design that would make it look more aesthetically pleasing. I reviewed his proposition and he was right. His change looked way better!

I know that some of you may say "That is a bit of a steep price" but honestly, I can't work with my hands to save my life. Also seeing the effort and time they put into this build made it all more worth it.

I can seriously recommend @Nirvashen for stand/cabinet builds.

Thank you @ernstb for the great write up on his experience @Zoom i like the idea very much i have been speaking with the lfs at clearwater to try and stock my tank cabinet but we will see how it goes, Btw if anybody is interested in seeing the 3ft tank and cabinet is more than welcome to pm me so we can arrange a meet and we can build anything that anyone wants
